Getting ready to reinstall my timing cover. From what I have read, if I get the new style seal instead of the felt or rope seal, I don't need the brass shield. Is this correct? And, if I get the new style seal, do I center the cover prior to installing the seal? Thanks. Tommy

With modern neoprene seal, no brass shield is needed, there is no felt to protect.
Yes, you can place seal in plate first and then center the front plate , or add seal later to cam shaft.

I used the new seal. I put the timing cover on first with the bolts loose, then the seal, then used the alignment tool. Once it was all lined up I tightened the bolts and then added a bit of Permatex between the seal and the cover. Let it sit overnight and that's it. Make sure you check the alignment one more time once everything sets up. Glad I read this I didn't know you didn't need the big thin washer.

This is a great improvement over the original. I use them in my T ‘s.
And for the purist you can’t see it!
