The kitchen temperature is in the thirties, but the stove will make it toasty and Shorty will enjoy her warm spot.

Is that a base burner, meant for coal, not wood?

I bought a wood stove but the darn thing burnt up the first time I tried to use it.

Our parlor stove is a Great Western Duplex - made from 1880 through 1922 I'm told, in Leavenworth Kansas with convict labor. The "duplex" refers either to the fact it's shape and grates are good for coal or wood, or possibly to its ability to serve as a cook stove while being decoratively elegant ? It's served us well since 1984, and continues to heat the south rooms, and we're grateful on mornings like this when the reported wind chill is -5f.

About 6 or 7 years ago I got tired of cutting firewood so I replaced the wood stove in my basement with one that burns anthracite coal. It's a lot less work.

I love the wood heat. I grew up with them. In fact I think I was in third grade before I figured out my name was not " go get wood".
Burnt wood in the shop and house until about 5 years ago when the back said enough is enough.
I still have an 1849 Indiapolis stove company wood cookstove in the kitchen for decoration but corn is my heat source now. Two 5 gallon buckets a day and empty ash pan every other day. Fill the gravity wagon in the fall for around $400 and Im good for winter. The time saved not cutting, splitting,stacking and carring wood not to mention wear on truck and equipment and repairs to splitter and saws is worth it to me. I do miss the smell and feel of a good old wood burning stove.

No wood stove, but I think the fireplace is working.

How/where does one buy coal anymore ? The last place I knew of around here quit selling it.

Enjoy them while you can gentlemen. An extensive system of sensors have been installed all along the Wasatch Front here in Utah and when the poobahs decide, a no-burn day/night is posted. Apparently there is a Smokey Patrol out there somewhere and if you are burning wood ATT they detect it, you are subject to a $300 fine. Yahoo!!

Raoul, I buy my coal in 40 lb. bags from an Amish gentleman who lives about 10 miles away. It comes from a town 60 miles northeast of Hershey.
Anthracite (hard coal) burns clean. No smoke, no soot, no smell.

I have had 3 or 4 different stoves through the years.
This latest is 3 year old EPA approved stove. It’s supposed to be 85% efficient.
I get a burn of 10 hours with good heat, on one load of good hard wood.
It replaced a Brunco stove, and I use about a third less wood per year. Finicky to operate and your wood must be well seasoned .
It is a Woodstock, Ideal steel.

My stove in the living room is a BuckStove. Also rated at 85% efficiency, with a catalyst and built in fan. Heats the whole main floor, I supplement with the furnace when it's below 20 to keep the basement warm.
Been a lot of supplementation this year...

If you have a wood stove and you have a dog, that's where he will be!

Our 92-year-old (in cat years) likes to hang out under the kitchen range. The dogs often seek the coldest corners of the room. Three dogs, three stoves, we're covered !
