Homestead in Montana. Probably about 1912 or 14. That's when this was opened to settlement. I came across this while looking for more photos of the road down to the river. 60 miles northwest to Big Sandy, the closest town on the north side or 75 to Chinook to the north east. Too many mountains in between to the east and the to south you had to go down that trail, take the ferry across the river and then 16 miles to Winnifred.

I would guess the concrete foundation was added much later. Note that it had electricity at one time but probably from a wind charger as there appears to be no high line power anywhere near.

Sha nouuk'" is a Blackfeet Indian word meaning "snow eater."
It is a warm wind that blows down the east side of the Rockies from the Gulf of Alaska and can raise the temperature 50 degrees in a few hours.
It is always followed by bitter cold and snow.

Speaking of “chinooks” a couple of years ago Leo DiCaprio was on a set up here by Calgary and there was one and he pronounced that it was “CLIMATE CHANGE”!!!

We've been living in a "chinook" all winter. That is changing starting tomorrow. The real Montana winter is arriving with a vengeance. This happened several years ago, we got a whole winters worth of snow in one week. When it was done we had five feet of snow on the flat. I had to break out the excavator to dig out the barns.

"Chinook" Is that where they built those helicopters with two blades?
I think the photo of the cabin triggered cabin fever.

Fantastic photo of that cabin Stan. Thanks for posting. Sure makes my imagination run wild....what it would be like living "back then" in all that desolation, every waking moment probably kept busy just finding food and firewood for mere survival. Worrying about predators, both two and four footers. Loneliness. Winds wanting to blow your little hand built shack to the next county. What do you do when you REALLY get sick? Okay, time to shut my mind off for the night!

The picture that Vernon posted is the first thing I think of when I hear the word "Chinook". I was a Crew Chief/Door Gunner on them in Vietnam '70/'71. Never had heard the word before I went in the army. Didn't find out about all of the other connections until years later. Dave

TO D Stout,

Belated as best but THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE !!!!!!!!! Your generation of hero's were disrespected and horribly treated upon their return. We all owe them a huge salute. These young men met the call of their country and did it with honor and sacrifice. The next time you see a veteran say "thank for your service".
That is the best recognition as a citizen can do.
