Not on the road 5 minutes and look what happened!

Post by Luke » Mon Feb 08, 2021 11:23 pm

Experienced Model T owner and occasional raconteur on this forum, A. Whiteman, just got his latest Model T officially on the road today.

After getting it home (via trailer from the registration centre) we proceeded to load up in order to take it on its first real run - to get some lunch and show it to another local T owner.

So... Mr Whiteman gets out of his gate, full throttle, and decides it would be fun to see if he could make the local sheep evacuate raisins more quickly than normal.

The resulting BANG! upon switching from battery to mag was pretty impressive. It was also noticed by the co-pilot shortly afterwards that the exhaust note sounded a little more 'throaty' than before...

Upon reaching the ultimate destination a short investigation was conducted and the following result discovered:

The owner was suitably contrite:

This call for some drastic action. The offending part was removed and dealt to with a large hammer and a piece of pipe, after which it looked like this:

A quick re-assembly later, it was fitted back to the vehicle and we could now hear the motor.

The good news out of today is that, following a little fettling and addressing of a few wee teething, issues this Colonial-bodied T is starting to run really well after probably 40 years or more off the road. Herewith the machine and happy owner:

I did that a couple of times with the old Plymouth, and fortunately didn't destroy the muffler, but I gave it up because I was afraid Mom & Dad would find out. :D

Thanks Luke ( I think ;-) )
That experience was certainly an awakening for the local sheep and cows!

copper vs steel - well, we may leave that for a separate thread perhaps ... :-)

I can say that with Luke and Chris' help I am a very happy owner and driver. Still work to go, such as windscreen, top and doors and maybe some paint (it is in primer currently) but the major thing is that it is registered (titled I think you say in the US) and warranted (that is safety inspection which is compulsory in NZ).

Our 28th national T rally starts tomorrow so I can perhaps take the roadster along in place of the 24 Morris :-) Happy days :-)

This supports the old adage, "he who hesitates when going from battery to mag-looses a muffler. Or something like that!

Quite right Dick, it was certainly a very loose muffler after that little episode

Great Thread to Start the Morning with a Chuckle!

Back in my teenage/early 20's days, I would from time to time shut the key off one of my hot rods rolling down the road, pump the gas a bunch & re-fire! The weaker of the 2 mufflers would usually exit from underneath with a very large BANG!

God Bless

I've had that happen. Usually it is with a problem in the ignition switch and jiggle the switch when the engine cuts out. Rebuilt the switch and no more problem. I learned years ago to switch from batt to mag only when the engine is idling. Even if I forget to switch, and am driving along, put in neutral and push the throttle up before making the switch.
Back around 1994 the San Diego club had an "On the Border" tour. In those days you could just cross right over the border without showing a passport. When coming back, they just asked, "where were you born?" Just tell them where, and they let you cross right over. No long lines or anything. So one day on that tour, we drove over to Tijuana and had lunch and visited the cultural center, then back to San Diego. Just before we crossed into Mexico, I backfired and blew the muffler! So was driving the rest of the day on straight pipe!

What do you expect from a reproduction muffler?

My first and only new muffler lasted less than 1/8th of a mile. It looked like yours only no black soot on it yet.

Rich, great response :-)

Larry, Bob; obviously a not uncommon occurrence - the soot in this particular muffler may, or may not, have been something to do with a previous clandestine 'test run' that was conducted the day before....

... when the car got slower and slower and slower until we had to pull up. Then the sun darkened to the point we couldn't even see each other*, whereupon the smell of Very Very Rich exhaust fumes permeated our brains and the carb mixture was hastily adjusted in order to achieve a retreat back to base.

* it may also have been at night, so possibly just a little journalistic license here, however the smoke was Very Thick!

Hehehe! The trouble you fellas go thru to be able to hear the engine in the wind...
I simply removed a couple baffles inside so I could hear it.
I think it's funnier in my head...

POW POP BANG

Post by Novice » Thu Feb 11, 2021 1:51 am

I backfired for the first time recently in the open express switching from Battery to mag. I have switched over many times before with no pow pop or bang. Need to make sure I don't dally in changing over and the revs are low next time. Thanks for the post. Guess I got a free pass this time. Lucky Me

I didnt see a solution posted. i have also experienced a blown muffler. every new one i install gets 6 - 1/2" evenly spaced weld beads on the seam.
i can still go bang accadently or on purpose without having to reshape the can. keeps customers happy too.
