stupid men

Men really are stupid some times. Looking through some e bay listings, I ran across two listings for very common model T wrenches. One was the adjustable monkey wrench, the other an early band wrench. There are at least ten different listings for both these tools, priced at $9 to $15 each. In my mind, pricey given the fact they are not all that hard to find at swap meets for $5 to $10 each. What would make both these tools sell for over $30 each ? Only reason I can find in the listing is not the tools, but the Gal holding them in the photos. She is wearing a low cut tank top, and no bra. Wow, I guess sex really does sell, and men can be very stupid at times.

The men buying them may be stupid, but the man selling them is not.

Many of us don't have swap meets to buy T things and rely on E-Bay, buyer beware!

In the very, very small print!... She will come to your shop and help to hold your nuts with that wrench! :o I think that's what I saw.

I found one of those "Moore Drop Forge" Ford wrenches next to the old well in our former house (I took i as a sign to buy the place --lol--), cleaned it up, detailed it and hung it on a wall. $40+? Man, maybe I should go into the Model T parts business...

As to Miss Spaghetti Strap in Winter in New York... that guy should take care of his tools better... she's gonna catch herself a death of cold. (and THEN who's gonna go out and slop the hogs, plow the frozen fields, and cut firewood?)

Speaking of overpriced and clueless... anyone notice the "model T engine" later in the series starting at 3 grand? I'm still trying to figure out what that head is off of... I'm thinking a jeep, but I just don't know...

Here is one of the listings in question, as well as one from a "gentleman" that is making a fine joke of listings like that as well. Do not look if easily offended! :o

There is an old phrase,"Let the buyer beware". A tool is worth what the buyer wishes to pay for it. I agree there are still many Model T tools for sale for less than those, however, for practical use, they are not necessary to the work on a Model T. In fact some more modern tools will do just as well and are even better to use than the old ones. But for a display, you need the tool in the best condition you can find. Especially those adjustable wrenches are very often worn at the jaws from years of use. So, "Let the buyer beware" You will also many ads in news papers and on TV as well as on internet, show attractive young women, so I guess it works.

The second ad is from Ely, MN. I want to see him stand outside in that outfit right now. Unless he took that pic right before the Polar Bear Club went for a dip.

He denied that he ever said it but the famous quote, real or not, originated in Barnum's time. Since the nineteenth century the population has grown immensely. I would imagine that by now the arrival of suckers worldwide must be up to a dozen per minute or more.

We have a pat answer to MANY questions and situations in my world. For those
who are reasonably quick on the uptake, it explains all and makes perfect sense.

"Cuz boobs"

Personally, I like it for its honesty. It cuts right through the crap and gets to the
point. I hear endless smoke-and-mirrors deflections and assertions, like the suggestion
here than men are stupid. Sure, plenty of men ARE stupid ! .... but I would put
money on it, that the chances of these buyers being of subpar IQ is not nearly as
high as it is "cuz boobs". I would further submit that those who might still argue
against this are incapable of being honest with themselves !

I wish you guys would listen to yourselves. As a new person to the hobby, I have paid too much for some things because I didn't know better. And that's all. If a seller gets a high price for something you have plenty of, and the buyer is happy, it's all good. Chill out. Bill

Thanks Bill! I think some people think others are stupid for what they pay. As you stated, “If both are happy...," As my dear Ole Dad says.., " Only worth what another is willing to pay"! Then we have those that travel half way across the country and only buy a $15.00 oil can. ”Don’t judge others unless you wish to be judged”.

Exactly Bill. I've knowingly paid "stupid" prices for some stuff, simply cuz: There it is, and I want it, (or need it). :)

And then there is that .... I paid 8K for my TT. It was pretty much what I wanted.
Three weeks later, a friend offered me his near identical truck for half that. Was I
stupid ? Bottom line is, I got what I wanted for a price I was willing to pay, and the
pleasure I expected to derive from the spending of that money has been everything
I wanted. Maybe I could have got one cheaper ? Maybe not. My crystal ball has been
on the fritz, so how could I ever know ? And how much is the not having something
worth to a person ? I spent six years and many thousands of dollars trying to find my
DeSoto. When I did, I paid the arbitrary asking price, because it was there in front
of me and I never knew if I'd ever find another. That was decades ago, and I've never
seen one for sale since. The friends that thought I'd lost my mind paying what I did
now acknowledge that it was a wise purchase. Only six are known to survive and the
price I paid was nothing, compared to what they are worth now. More importantly, I
never missed the money, and the pleasure of having one, the anxiety of the hunt now
over, is really what matters.

You will find the same thing in a swap meet. You are looking for a certain part or tool and finally find one. You decide to look on through the meet and do not find anything else so you go back and the one you saw is gone. However, if you buy it, you will often find a better one for less somewhere else in the same swap meet.

I would not sell anything on ebay for less then $10 plus shipping. It simply isn't worth the effort to package and ship something for less then that. I would not make a special trip to the PO for a $10 item; the buyer likely would have to wait for a couple of days until I was going someplace near the PO.

I would not sell anything on ebay or anywhere else that required me to ship the part/product for less then $15. It's 13 miles to the Post Office and 13 miles home. I get $15 plus the cost of shipping and I have to drive 26 miles and take roughly 90 minutes out of my life. In reality for $15 it's a gift.

You need to move closer to the post office.

Actually, the post office needs to move closer to me, and eventually it probably will. I live in what used to be the middle of nowhere here in SW Florida. At present they are building all around me as the land to the west is basically built out. There are plans afoot to build at least two and possibly three huge housing developments about 1/4 mile from where we live. If this happens (and I hope that it doesn't) a Post Office in this immediate area will be a necessity.
