Is it ok to ground the mag to kill the motor on the test stand?

Should be fine. about 90 percent of all mags are shut off by grounding them.

You would do better to shut it down by leaning out the mixture at the carb and leave the mag alone.

Pull choke full on. if you dont want to lose your carburator adjustment.

I never use a battery so before I found a coil box with a switch on the front, i ran a wire from the mag post to a house light switch to turn it on and off.

Find a single pole double throw switch and you can run mag or battery. Dan

I see that you are set up to kill the mag to the back of the engine. That may be ok, but for a more positive shut down I would just use a alligator clip at the mag post to attach the coil box wire to the mag post. For shit down just unclipt the wire from mag post. The original Ford switch was, on / off, not mag to ground.

Don't ever allow battery current (DC) to go to the magnito post. Just break the circuit to kill the engine
