TT rear axle outer seal?
Installing new outer felt seals on my 25 TT and they just don't fit. The one that came out was about 1/8" the new one is about an inch wide. The retainer is only about an inch total. Any ideas?

Pat: Is this the part? No dimensions, but it appears thinner than the one you describe and is for TT rear axle. best, jb

Re: TT rear axle outer seal?
I pretty much buy just TT inner axle felts and make the rest of the felts I need out of them.
And just like the cars, the TT should have a felt on the inside of the hub too. The outer cap is very thin and there isn’t much room for a felt. It also seems that some TT’s may not have had an outer felt under that cap, but just the felt in the hub. I do like to put a washer, felt, & cap on the ones I work on. It seems to work well to put a thin line of permatex ultra black on the washer, set the felt on it, set a weight on it flat on the workbench and let it cure 24 hours. I do the same thing with the wheels. Lay them down, put a thin line of ultra black in the channel, install the felt, put a weight on it and wait 24 hours. Good inner seals are helpful. I make my own out of solid stock.

Re: TT rear axle outer seal?
The outer caps are shallow, only about 1/2" deep. The seal went between the cap and wheel for the outer. The cap was there to keep the bearing in place. For the outers, get this: https://www.modeltford.com/item/1021-2-3.aspx
Glad that someone made the felt seals, to bad they didn't make them right. The hole in the center is way too small. But I know someone...

Re: TT rear axle outer seal?
New to this thread. Also working on my TT I bought from my dad. He had rebuilt the rear years ago. Spokes failed while I was driving so pulled it apart. Dad had rebuilt the bearings, brakes, etc. and reassembled with shims in hubs. After removing spokes installed hub to test taper. Extreme slop. The hub was hitting the new dust seal cap that dad had installed. Behind cap was a new felt what was 5/8-3/4 thick and next a washer for bearing. After pulling above refitted hub and it locked on taper. The space between hub and end of rear end tube is only 1/4-5/16.
After reviewing several threads I see that some of the dust caps appear to be much shorter than the 1 1/4 inch new covers I have. From a design stand point seems they would be designed to be hammered into place on the assembly line so the cap either has to hit a stop on the outside or inside. If outside it would be the length. On inside it would stop on the tube end.
Either way based on the gap between hub and tube the felt appears to have been much smaller than the ones dad installed.
I read that felt should be installed between hub and dust cap.
Anyone have a specification on thickness of this felt?
How about thickness of felt under dust cap?
Sending wheels off for respoke so I want to get this work completed to verify correct fitment before shipping hubs and wheel parts.
Thanks for all the help.

Re: TT rear axle outer seal?
Measured the parts for reference and future users.
The gap between hub and washer on end of tube is less than .125. I estimated 1/4-5/16 in previous post. See picture. After seeing gap it appears there is very little room for the felt under dust cap. You can see the edge of washer in picture.
Dust cap and felt dad installed. Pretty sure they came from Lang's. He bought lots of parts from Steve.
The new dust cap dad installed is 1 inch deep, estimated at 1.25 above. Looks like it should be driven all the way on to tube. Then install an x thick felt seal.

Re: TT rear axle outer seal?
There never was a felt under the cap during production. Felts have been added over the years but they are not original to the TT. If you do install or manage to install a felt under that short little cap, don't forget a washer for the bearing to rub on.
