New exhaust pipe for Model T

Post by Kajtek1 » Thu Mar 18, 2021 6:48 pm

I found old topics where there was Larry from CA making new pipes, but seems he is no longer a member here and I can't find him on google.
Are new pipes available? Mine has crack along the weld, so it might be weldable, but I like new idea better.

Kris, You didn't say what year T that you have, The pipes that Larry Smith had made up were duplicates of the original pipe used by Ford with the original pressed steel end muffler. They wouldn't work with any original cast iron end muffler or even a modern reproduction pressed steel end muffler, without modification, and maybe not even then. They are longer because the pipe goes all the way through the muffler from the front steel end to the rear, replacing the smallest inner tube normally found in Model T take apart mufflers. Recently, he posted here on the forum that he had no intentions of having anymore made up, as they were a 'pain in the arse to ship. The guys, like me, who bit the bait when he made them are the lucky devils.

It is 1922 model and I think I have cast iron muffler, but have to check it closer.
Sounds like welding old pipe is my only option?

The new pipes sold by the suppliers may not be exactly correct, they will work.

Any of the modern reproduction pipes, should work on a 22 T. Depending on the manufacturer who supplies the vendor, there may be variances in pipes from one vendor to another. I read where the ones from Lang's worked well for one owner.

I purchased and installed the stainless steel exhaust pipe that Lang’s sells. It was a bit too long on the back end, but with a $15 pipe cutter from Harbor Freight I was able to shorten it to the correct length and now it fits like a glove. It’s the shiniest thing under the car, no regrets and definitely worth the extra $40 upgrade from the basic steel version they also sell.

The pipes come a little too long so they can be trimmed to fit as needed, if needed.

Lang's part #4037C. If you want it in stainless it's part #4037CSS. When I bought mine it fit perfectly.

Too bad a T person with lots of money can't come forward to make the last style exhaust pipe for our cars. If Ford, and others could do it back then, it can be done again! There is apparently not enough interest. I have a NOS original Ford script pipe that we used for a pattern, but were not able to use the exact Ford method for making them.

I just looked at Snyders and they list an exhaust pipe for 09-27 Model T. Looks like you have some options.

I'm making my own from stainless handrail, if I ever finish that project.

If you’re planning to replace the muffler too (I had to, the entire thing was rusted beyond repair) make sure you test fit the new muffler on your new pipe to make sure the two will correctly mate. The welded muffler that I ordered from Lang’s was manufactured incorrectly and the I.D. Of the muffler was just a smidge too small to accept the new exhaust pipe. Lang’s was great about swapping it out, but just something to be aware of.

If Larry's pipes were made like the Canadian ones, that would overcome the need for the raised upset in the pipe that is so difficult to achieve.

I believe it is the F11 tractor muffler that costs less than $30, and it works fine. Many speedsters do not use a muffler, just a straight pipe.
