Chickasha Report

Post by Steve Jelf » Fri Mar 19, 2021 1:30 pm

Greetings from deepest Okieland. All I've done so far is set up, sell a couple of things, and chat with a few of the folks passing by my space. I've taken just a couple of pictures to post, and will shoot more later after I get out and circulate.

That’s a good price on that ‘11 AB. Especially with the correct Splitdorf Model H mag. Thanks especially for that pic. I’m hoping to install a top on my ‘10 AA. Whats your estimate of the % fill of the south building ?
I don’t know why I turned out this way. My parents were decent people 🤪

That guy in the top picture from Indiana is Dallas Landers.

The gentleman from Mound City is David Stroud. Dallas bought his TT from Dave. I believe the Indiana guy in the center is Joe, but I don't remember his last name.

Dallas talked me down to $295 on this, but then he decided not to buy, or I decided not to let it go that cheap after all, I don't remember which. So It's still available at my original price. Maybe I should put it on eBay with a secret reserve. :)

Maybe next year I will be a seller and pay for my trip selling the set 😂

Headed home this morning. Had a great time and met some great people. Thank you Dean Yoder for the supper. FJ, I will be seeing you soon at Joe's place in Indiana. Good to see Dave Stroud and Steve, Donnie Brown and many more. Found some treasures I can use on my projects.

From the pictures posted it looks like the buying crowd was pretty thin. Hard to tell tho.
I hope the vendors did well enough to make it worth their while to go back again and Erslands did OK.

Saturday morning, 10:30 am, the place will be a ghost town by mid afternoon if it's like it used to be.

...it looks like the buying crowd was pretty thin.

Sellers too. A lot of folks who used to come have dropped out. You could have fired a cannon through the north building and not hit a soul. Take old timers dying off and not enough young ones picking up the torch, and add a pandemic on top of that, and things ain't what they used to be. Maybe next year with the virus presumably behind us...

Still, it was worth coming. I sold enough to pay for my space, meals, and travel, so I'm happy. My neighbor in the space next to me scored over eight grand yesterday, packed up and left, and some others told me they did well. Now, at 11:30 AM, lots of folks are loading up to go. At noon I will do the same, and should be home by chow time.

All true and add - searching with Google and then buying on-line. I would love to attend many of these Swap Meets, but the travel cost & time just always puts a damper on it.

I think that the folks who run the Chickasha pre war meet also run the later old car meets that happen there. There is a classic car meet at the same location a little later on. Probably someone is going to see if those meets will have much attendance.

This is probably hard to do but what would you guess the buyer attendance was?? A couple times when I've been there it was mostly the other vendors looking for deals from the other vendors and not a lot of people coming in the gate to buy. Other times it was pretty busy.

Stan

The free parking field had about 15 cars there Sat morning , almost as many motor homes.

Crowd Friday was there, buyers walking, parking field looked good, buying and selling brisk.

nothing on Sat. morning. Thursday line up had the busy buying amongst the vendors as always, a few outsiders.

The better pieces sell on set up all day and at 4 pm when gates opened and more vendors uncovered and unpacked and displayed , then first thing, opening day Friday. like every swap meet, early birds get the worms :)

I'd say the head count was about a third of what it used to be, vendors and buyers both. But I sold about $700 worth of parts, so I'm happy. I left just before noon, and there were only the hard core remaining. Had good visits with a lot of friends whom I see only once a year, there at Chickasha. I'll be back every year, barring another pandemic outbreak, as long as they keep having it.

I think that the folks who run the Chickasha pre war meet also run the later old car meets that happen there.

No, it's a totally different outfit. I believe the fall meet started even before the prewar meet. The first time I went to the fall meet, in 1986, the old Rock Island station, disused for may years, still had the old White Waiting Room sign over the door to the main lobby. The fall meet and the May meet which joined it in the late nineties have always been open to cars of all years. Joe Ersland started the March Prewar meet about 1990. The only thing it had in common with the other two was the location featuring the vilest restrooms in the Western Hemisphere. The rebuilding of the fairgrounds buildings a few years ago was a wonderful improvement.

I've seen Bill enough times that I should have recognized him. :)

There were other swap meets later in the year or there use to be anyway. I don’t know who ran them but not the same folks who run the prewar meet. Those meets were for later old and classic cars which are have the biggest crowd draw these days. Somebody is keeping tabs on those meets and the numbers they draw if they are still having them at the same location.

I remember when I was a kid in my 20's and going to swap meets, if I showed up on Sat AM then it was halfway done. I got my Indian snubbers and the head gasket for my rajo there...

Think about this. Swap mets used to be Friday to Sunday, now heven help us if we have to be out ther Saturday Morning...hecause we're done on Thursday???

OK, maybe I'm an old fogie who used to do swaps on weekends bwcause that's when we dcould do it... I was going to throw down to fly out Friday, but it sounds like, thank God, I Wasn't able to book a flight, because by the time I got there EVERYONE is gone.

Had I put in for a ticket to fly out last night, and shown up when no one was there, I woulda kinda been heartbroke. Not only for the missed deals, but for the missed camaderie, because everyone is going home on Friday...

Chickasha Report

Post by FreighTer Jim » Sat Mar 20, 2021 9:57 pm

Everyone didn’t go home on Friday.

For those that complain about attendance
being down for Sellers & Buyers ...

If going to a swap meet is just about
Buying & Selling - stay home.

If you are reading this - you can buy
and sell on The Inter Web.

This - is what swap meets are about:

Was the full windshield red speedster for sale ? And if so, what was
the asking ? Same question on the Caddy.

This year was my first opportunity to go to Chickasha. I had read that meet had been declining over the years, so I kept my expectations low. My main reason to go was to pick up my order from Gene French and and deliver my leftover round gas tank to my hopeful buyer. I figured I would be there for about an hour. Well, I was pleasantly surprised at the show. I actually spent a few hours there looking at cars and stuff and talking with people.

My wish list was mainly made up of T specific tools. I ended up spending two dollars more than I made from selling the gas tank on a flywheel bolt wrench, two main bearing socket wrenches, two wheel flanges to make a clutch compressor tool. I suspect every T owner has more than one plug wrench, but I also bought another one with a closed socket end, which is correct for our 15 runabout. How could I say no to a nice lady selling it for a dollar, which included a cookie???

It was also interesting to me to compare the Ford designed square socket wrench to the Blackhawk square socket wrench. Much better quality and also has a con rod wrench at the other end. Finally, I couldn't pass up a T shirt that Freight Jim was selling. I think it pretty much sums up a lot of us.

A couple of observations that I had after the show. From a tool perspective, I was a bit surprised by the limited selection. Pretty much what you can find on eBay. Usually at or below prices there, and of course no shipping. I was surprised that I couldn't find a single T pliers or screwdriver for sale. Plenty of plug wrenches though.

It is no doubt that eBay and online posting of items for sale has hurt swap meets like these, and for other hobbies too. I grew up near Toledo Ohio and every spring the largest model airplane show in the world was held with a huge swap meet. Last year the show was cancelled after over 50 years due to declining attendance. Decline in the hobby interest and online auction or selling also being a factor I am sure.

It also seems like it would be good if they combined all the booths to the south wing. Having multiple, mostly empty buildings makes it seem more depressing then having a single building that is mostly full.

Lastly, it was so nice to see peoples FACES again. I am not trying to make any other statement about the issue other than it was so nice to be able to see people smile and more clearly hear and understand what they were saying without a mask in the way. I was quickly reminded of the reality of masks after leaving, when I stopped for a burger at Braums and had to put the mask back on...

For those that have only attended this year, don’t read too much into it. It was a particularly down year due to Covid. Yes, it has been down in general compared to decades ago, but this year was not the recent norm. I suspect 2022 will be much the same as 2019 in terms of buyers and sellers.

I suspect the same. This year a lot of folks stayed home because they haven't had their shots yet.

Erik Barrett brought this 1914 Overland to sell. There was no buyer until one of the guys who came with him liked it so much he decided to buy it.

Across the road you can see a big trailer with a couple of cars bound for Model T Haven.

Nice photos and narrative, good way to start Covid wind down and welcome spring. jb

Birdhaven was there. I talked with him about the FP voltage regulator. He said components are very slow coming in. Electrical parts are the worst. He told me its best to call and place your order. Parts are coming in to build this stuff but slowly. Just about every other industry is the same from my business point of view.

Ill answer the Birdhaven question till Steve can answer. Yes, Birdhaven was there. I had a set of disc brakes delivered to Chickasha by them. Our discussions were mostly about the brakes, and how getting parts and materials for their items has been sketchy and causing price increases, delays, ECT. The same problems applies for the fun project items. As things start to get back to normal. the fun project stuff should start to be available again.

I'll get around to adding some pictures later. These old bones take longer to recover than they used to :)

Steve. Thanks for the pics of my speedster. .......

I agree with what FJ posted above.

I don't understand the current "swap meet' mentality: Everyone posts for months before about how that can't wait to go to the swap meet, how they are looking forward to being there, how they can't wait to see old friends again, etc etc etc. They travel great distances to attend the event. Then, as soon as they get there, they can't wait to pack up and leave. This happens at Chickasha, Hershey and even Bakersfield.

Back in the "olden days", old car swap meets were really social events. It was about getting there early, setting out the chairs, assembling the BBQs and carousing for a few days and into the nights. We even managed to buy and sell LOTS of old iron and cars in between trading lies. I remember the shenanigans that would go on during the evenings at the Long Beach Model T swap meets, those nights were epic. Groups of sellers would have fires roaring, music blaring, "anti-freeze" flowing, and loud conversations could be heard until the early morning hours. I remember one year our group did a Tiki theme in our spaces with tiki torches and someone brought in some dancing girls. Our friend thought he could play the ukalele and about six of us piled into a T touring a drove it around the swap meet at about 3am while he tried to play and sing. Boy, did we had some fun parties during those swap meets and the hangovers to prove them. People would stay until they could no longer stay. They just didn't want to leave because they knew it would not happen again for another year.

I remember going to swap meets with a flashlight! People setting up in the dark an hour before sunrise, my friends and I wandering around looking in boxes as they were taken out of the truck. Flashlights all over the place looking in to see what sellers were digging out. Then staying, visiting, swapping tales, more searching for treasures, more comparing notes (did you see the Rajo so-n-so had?), going back and looking some more. A few sellers would begin picking up shortly after noon. Most wouldn't begin to close up until 3 or 4 pm. 5 o'clock, the last of the sellers would be packing up. We would be picking up a few last minute good deals from people that didn't want to take it all home again.
That was for common one day only swap meets!

The last few Bakersfield meets I went to, I had to make it a one day run. Left the house at 1 am for the six hour one way drive. Arrive and park at the Bakersfield fairgrounds just as they opened the gate to buyers at 7 am. Search, buy, and visit most of the day. Sellers would begin folding up around 2, I stayed for the final best buys and visits until about 5. Then hit the road again. With a stop for dinner, and gas, I would pull into home about midnight. Twenty-three hours without so much as a nap!

Maybe again, someday.

I was hoping to go to Chickasha this year, but my swap meet buddy's plans changed and I didn't want to go alone. Really though, what takes a lot of the fun out of it, is all the postings about "what I'm bringing to Chickasha", followed by the postings about how to consider this or that item to be "sold". I'm not picking on anyone who decides to do that, nor anyone who sees an item they need and wants to buy it. It's just, for me, it takes a lot of the fun out of it. The swap meet seems to begin before we even leave our homes... No wonder people leave after the first day, the whole thing appears to just be a hand off of pre-arranged sales. What's the point of driving 1200 miles each way after all that? All that being said.... I wish I had gone this year ;)

Steve actually had a valid point about not having our "rabies shots" (as I'm jokingly calling it) yet... I just made it past the 2 week post #2 last Wednesday, and with both of us having "pre-conditional conditions" and the other half still early in recovery from rotator cuff reconstruction surgery, we've been maintaining the whole quarantine thing... (I'm thinking about having my "shot card" reproduced in minature on a dog tag, and wearing it like my rabies tag... Woof!)

BTW - that is one pretty Overland. I'm surprised that it didn't sell right off, were money not an object, well, that's the story of our lives, but yeah, if the means had ways I'd be rearranging cars in the shop! Actually it looked like there were a few really nice projects (and a few complete cars) there...

Well, I figure next year I'll start making up for all the fun I've been missing! :D

Chickasha Report

Post by FreighTer Jim » Sun Mar 21, 2021 6:21 pm

I met Kim Dobbins - Mark Chaffin - Glenn Chaffin
for the first time awhile back at Bakersfield Swap.

I stopped at Glenn’s table - I was going to haul
some Model T vehicles for Mark - introduced
myself.

Mark asked me to ask Kim how much a
Model T was that Kim was selling for someone.

Kim asked “ Who wants to know ? “

I said “ Mark Chaffin “

What Kim said I can’t post here .... 😬

Then Mark - who was within earshot
started laughing - Kim was laughing ...😉

And I was amongst Family.

Because I don’t Buy & Sell
Because I Observe & Record & Share

I go to swap meets & view things
from a different perspective.

I saw Kindness - Generousity- Admiration
Encouragement - Hope - Family

Dean Yoder Made Me A Hamburger 😊

So ....
If it makes anyone feel any better ....

Jerry, The things you see listed "for sale" before the meet is a very very small drop in the bucket. The "wish list" items are also a small part of the picture. Asking about, or trying to pre-sell big heavy items is a good way to make sure you can find the heavy thing you want, or sell the heavy thing you probably would not have taken if it was not pre sold. As Jim mentioned, the swap meet experience is still alive and well. Just not as many vendors as there were years ago.

The three speedsters were not for sale. They belong to a speedster club from the Tulsa area. I have a card somewhere in my pile of stuff that has their club name and contact info. They tried to recruit me and my speedster into their club. I will be contacting them soon to probably join their ranks. They had some nice cars. Ill be starting another post of my photos to keep this post from getting too long. . There will be some more pics of the speedsters in my post.

This was the first time I made it to Chickasha for nearly 20 years or so. Last was in the early 2000's with my old buddy that passed away in '08. My wife and I went and made a mini vacation out of it. I picked up 3 Chicago transmissions from Donnie Brown that he graciously held for me for over a year. Many thanks Donnie!!! We had a very nice visit, just like we had known each other for years.
Found a few other things that I needed and got to visit with Dallas, Joe, Steve Jelf, Model T Haven Mark, and several others that I didn't get their names. The attendance was down as I expected it to be, but was still a HOOT!! My feet and back gave out before we got to see everything anyway, started on Thur., left Fri. about noon. As far as I'm concerned, the show itself is worth the trip, even if I don't buy anything. My Wife and I are both retired now, so we don't have be anywhere in particular.
Looking forward to next year!!!! Dave :D :D

I sprained some knee ligaments on Thursday during the staging (the cold wind probably was a factor), and of course was tied to my spaces, so I didn't get out much once the meet was officially underway. But from what I did see, it was a real buyer's market this year. Lots of very reasonably priced items, including a lot of early brass pieces. One example was the early one-piece front axle and spindles on the table across the building from me for $1,450. It didn't sell.

I stayed home and worked!

I knew if I went I would buy crap I don't need with money I don't have to bring home and try to find a place where I could find it if I needed it.

I have a huge auction coming up and by the time we get done setting it up I will have seen all the rusty parts I need to for awhile.
