Crankshaft repair???

Post by Steve Bender » Wed Mar 24, 2021 8:20 pm

I purchased this crankshaft at Chickashee and cleaned it up to use in a spare engine. There appears that someone used brazing on the inside of the third main. Why would they do this? Is there anyway to clean it up?

Trying to take out the float end play of the worn thrust babbit in the 3rd bearing cap.
it would be easy enough to turn it off in a lathe and then have it crack tested, myself I wouldn't use it, a lot of heat has gone into that shaft to make brazing stick.

I don't think the person selling it knew. It was covered in thick old grease and appeared so for a very long time all the journals are round and measure close to standard so we thought it was a good one until I got home and cleaned it up. I don't understand why you would do this to fix the end play instead of working on the cap??

Someone had an oxygen/acetylene torch and not the means to do babbitt work. How many years have past since its day.

It surprises me that someone would do that! They would need to remove the cap to braze the crankshaft. More babbit could have been soldered to the cap.

I would think you would have to have removed the crank to do it. It would have been much simpler to take just the cap off and add babbitt.

If they did braze the crank while in the block... the bad thrust would have been the least of their problems. Cuz the center main bearing would have been on the FLOOR!

Agreed they must have done it out of the block or the babbitt would have melted out. The surface is built up so much I don't think a cap would fit.
