I'm looking for opinions on universal thread chasers for repairing the hubcap threads on the hubs and also the threads on manifolds. The tool I am looking at is the [image][/image]OTC7402

My opinion save you money. Buy the correct tool for the job , you'll be glad you did.

I have one of them and it works ok of you take your time and are real careful. One nice thing about it is that once you have the correct thread die in the holder, you can start the tool from the back of the threads and work outwards. Often it's hard to start a thread die because the outer threads are damaged and this tool helps avoid that.

Like Keith said, take your time. That tool works fine if you are slow and careful and the threads are just messed up, but it can't make new threads where there aren't any old ones left.

As others have said...take your time and it’s a nice tool. I’ve found reasons on mine to use the tool on other things...

As to why take time? Look at it another way...have you ever changed manifold gaskets all by yourself without cheaters on the studs? Sort of the same thought process in finding balance.

I have used one of those thread restorers. I was NOT impressed. Get a Thread File instead. Much more accurate and easier to use. Multiple thread-counts on each file with SAE and Metric available. The thread files have saved my caboose more than once.

The thing I don't like about the thread restorer is the threads cut into the V portion of the tool and make it difficult to turn and keep the thread chaser accurately in the threads.

I have used the OTC version of this tool professionally for 35 years. I would not be without it. It works perfectly on both Model T and Buffalo hubs. At work it is predominately used on the axle stubs of a floating hub rearend.

If you use one, don't get real aggressive with how tight you make it. That aluminum is easy to end up with thread marks on the backing area.
