1904 - the fastest woman alive, and a Ford

Post by Rob » Sat Apr 10, 2021 11:12 am

Not sure if they were accurate, but 999 was owned at one time by a woman. And, she was reported to be the fastest woman on earth. In February 1904 the old racer "and it's mate" were reportedly purchased by stage star Leah Russell:

In March, Ms. Russell made the newspapers, as the fastest woman alive:

A month later, confirmation that Ms. Russell did indeed own 999:

I've heard of "fast" women, but they're usually in a different line of work.

I wondered about that aspect of the story. In all seriousness, Henry Ford's 999 was still commanding headlines. Barney Oldfield was the first to go under 60 seconds on a one mile track with the racer, then Henry Ford sets the world record mile time, beating the old record by 6 seconds, and then propelling Leah Russell at 68 mph.

D**n women. They belong at home doing the laundry, washing clothes, raising the children, and getting supper on the table. What is wrong with her? Next thing you know she will want to vote. A woman's place is in the HOME.

The past is a great place and I don't want to erase it or to regret it, but I don't want to be its prisoner either.

So one of the many times we were at Carlisle for the Chrysler show Leah Pruett (way before she was famous) was there giving rides in her Challenger. Angie got a great ride and a lasting memory.
