Another ammeter question

Post by Rod Petrie » Mon Apr 19, 2021 4:32 pm

I wired my 26TT according to Ron Patterson's diagram. It is 6v negative ground with a voltage regulator. It is not running yet but when I turn on the lights the ammeter pegs to the right (charge). What do I do?

Reverse the 2 ammeter wires. You got em crossed

yes, wired backwards. "Pegging" ammeter? Sounds like a short.

Reproduction ammeters for the 26/27 model years are cheap junk. They are no where near close to reading correctly. When I purchased my voltage regulator from John Regan he was kind enough to loan me an accurate ammeter to adjust the third brush. So that said, find an accurate ammeter and hook it up between the regulator and line when adjusting the third brush IAW the instructions provided with the regulator. Also it is important to make a fine adjustment the next day as outlined in the instructions.

I'm confused! Most TT's in 26 & 27 still use the earlier style dash panels, but I have seen closed cabs with the passenger style. What is it?

Larry - I've not seen any open cab TT's with the "Improved" passenger car style switch plate but I have seen later closed cab TT's with the passenger car type and the dash has the oval cut-out rather than the square one as most '19 to '25's passenger cars sport.

Here's two different closed model TT's, late models, with the Improved Car oval switch plate. Ford did these ;)

If the ammeter in question is a new reproduction small '26-'27 type, these are Model A meters, with special 20-20 faceplates, and the Model A is positive ground, so you have to switch the wires at the terminal posts on the rear of the meter, for Model T negative ground. They just don't make both anymore.

I have a "depot hack style" lnstrument mount with the 26-7 style cutout. Is that what you mean? Its stamped steel, a little bigger than the switch assembly . I think they were on TT's, not the style full dash as pictured.

They are talking about the small panel that the light/ignition and amp meter mount to, not the bent bracket that it attaches to in your case. This would be the 1919 to 1925 car style and sometime in to 1926 TT style; http://www.mtfca.com/discus/messages/41 ... 1414604498
I know the voices aren't real but damn they have some good ideas!

My switch plate is like the second picture and i have a repro ammeter. If the ammeter is Model A this explains the need to reverse the wires. I did reverse the wires and it now reads correctly. Thanks for the help.
