.....an air vent to hopefully aid in the prevention of gear lube gradually leaking out thru' axle bearings due to rear end temperature change expansion.

Looks like a homemade breather for an axle that has had modern seals installed.

With that hose barb, you could run some rubber hose to a location of your choice.

Yes, home made breather. I'd attach a long hose with a loop in it and attach the upper end up high to prevent water entering the rear end.

Maybe it's for air pressure, hook a hose up to it and an air pump and pressurize to keep the oil up in the engine. :lol: Jim

This was the first perpetual motion automobile. Hot air made by friction in the rear end was naturally pumped into the number four cylinder where the pressure added 30 miles to each gallon of gas used. The project was squelched when Henry found out the fitting would add 3 cents to the price of the Model T.....
