Just examined my McLaren wheels, they need the lugs welded to be safe. Has anyone taken the next step and had the welding done? Back side of wheel or both sides? Also what have you done about the galvanize that gets removed during welding. Thanks

Can you use press in studs like modern automobiles?

I suspect the you are referring to demountable rim lugs...? There was a thread recently discussing welding the lugs to the rims... I’ll post a link if I can find it

Those wheels bolt to wood wheel hubs.

Kevin, that thread is exactly what I am referring to.. I purchased the wheels in the 2007 time frame, just got the T on the road last summer. Now that I am back home for summer, just had opportunity to look at the lugs and I think I have the same issue.

I can’t find the thread... but as I recall the lugs were installed into a slot in the rim, then crimped/peened/swedged/upset (or whatever you wanna call it). After a number of uses the lugs would work loose and fall to the ground when the rim was dismounted from the wheel.

I imagine any amount of weld would suffice, as long as it didn’t interfere with the felloe/rim interface. The galvanizing will introduce complications with any welding or brazing process, and no doubt would cause an ugly spot in the plating.

Hey thanks for the input, going to start dismounting all the tires & finding a good welder to fix things right soon. POR 15 should have a coating that could work, have used their products for years with excellent results. Will post the results when finished.

Well here’s an update on my McLaren wheels purchased around 2007. After dismounting the spare I found the lug was welded on the inside. Thanks Mark McLaren for a professional product! I really did need the practice breaking down the tire anyway!!!!!
