My 1927 Model T Coupe Restoration
The restoration of my 1927 coupe is underway. I will post photos as it proceeds. Hope you will find them interesting. I have 27 photos to post now. Can I include all of them in one post? Any suggestions on how best to do this and how to continue to record the restoration over the next several months?

Re: My 1927 Model T Coupe Restoration
There's a limit of five photos per post. You have to post five, then five more in another post, then five more, etc. Sometimes it's kind of annoying, but that's the way it is.
The inevitable often happens.

Re: My 1927 Model T Coupe Restoration
You can post them all in the same thread. Simply start your thread, post 5 photos, then “post reply” to your own post and post 5 more then continue in this manner until all photos are posted. It will appear that they are all posted together, with only a couple of small identifying lines between every 5 photos. You can also post any remarks you have for each set of photos. It would be advisable to do this late at night so your photo sets are not interrupted by a poster. Jim Patrick

Re: My 1927 Model T Coupe Restoration
The first photo is of my Mom and Dad with the coupe in 1959 during the 75 anniversary of my home town in North Dakota. It was in the parade. It hasn't been run in the 62 years since. Hopefully, it will be in the next few months. The second photo was taken last fall just before we started to disassemble it.

That's a very solid looking vehicle. How did the chassis come to be painted?

Re: My 1927 Model T Coupe Restoration
Robert, I have watched the three Model T-Tips videos about rebuilding the driveshaft/rear axle and am undecided on what to do, do it ourselves or by a professional.

Re: My 1927 Model T Coupe Restoration
Based on the pictures you have posted, doing the rear axle will be a snap, just dive in and learn. When I broke an axle shaft on my standard rear end, I decided to buy a used small drum Ruckstell and rebuild it to install in my T.
Here are some threads and pics covering the process. I had never done a standard Model T rear end before, much less a Ruckstell, but it turned out fine.

Re: My 1927 Model T Coupe Restoration
Pat, I forgot to answer your April24 question. The frame was not painted. It was blasted cleaned to bare metal. It does look like gray paint. The primer is going to be Rust-Oleum gray, so I have added two half pints of Rust-Oleum prime brown to have a contrast when painting it.

I think they are about $20 each. I have three under each car.
Your choice. Metal or plastic. Both will work.

Re: My 1927 Model T Coupe Restoration
Prime coat being applied. The odd color of the prime is because I tinted the gallon of gray with two half pint cans of rust color. I did this because the gray was almost the same color as the sandblasted bare metal.

Re: My 1927 Model T Coupe Restoration
The only way you can delete your post is if no one has responded to it, however, you can remove your long post by deleting the post, line by line and post a shorter message in order to shorten the thread, which is what I just did to my threads that had nothing to do with your restoration. Just make sure your new message has at least 10 characters. Jim Patrick

Re: My 1927 Model T Coupe Restoration
Bruce, knowing you wanted to shorten this thread by removing posts that had nothing to do with your restoration, I went through and deleted my long post with the three books and my post with the oil pan. I was unable to totally delete them, but I was able to delete the pictures and delete the message, line by line and post short, 10 character encouragement messages in their place. If there are other threads of mine you wish me to remove, please let me know. In the future, anything I post on this thread will be short and on subject, reserving the space for you to document your progress in pictures and comment. Maybe others can do the same. I hope this helps. In order to save space, I would suggest that you ask questions in separate threads and post the results of your decision on this thread. Jim Patrick

Re: My 1927 Model T Coupe Restoration
Did you check out and clean the gas tank? If old fuel was left in the tank, it could set up like varnish and be very hard to clean. Also the fuel line and vaporizer must be completely clean too.
If the tank had been drained, it could have had water or condensation in it causing rust.

Up date. A photo by the rebuilder showing the engine being boxed for shipment to me! I am anxious to see it!! Complete rebuild with new upgraded camshaft. I shipped it by Fastenal and being returned by Fastenal. I found them very accommodating and very reasonable cost wise.

I wish I could share it with you here.

Re: My 1927 Model T Coupe Restoration
I rebuilt the coil box using the waterproof material and the original contacts, photos attached. I cleaned the contacts using the toilet cleaner, "The Works", per a suggestion by the Coilman. It worked great. He rebuilt my coils. What a great man to work with, very professional and always willing to answer questions and offer helpful advice!! I will coat the coils using linseed oil per his suggestion.
The contacts are soldered. I used the screw rivets that came with the rebuild material to attach the contact strip to the bottom and the vertical contact plate to the box frame. I may replace them with pop rivets.
Four more photos on next reply.

Re: My 1927 Model T Coupe Restoration
Cool build. I like your color choice.
Did you have to replace the door glass channels? I'm trying to figure out how to do it for my '27 Coupe.

Reinstalled the gas tank. New pad between the tank and cowl, new pads on the straps, new adhesive pads on upper tank supports, and new sediment bulb.

Bruce. How do you plan to remove the dents from your radiator shell? The dent on the front is very deep. It can be done. Have you nickel plated it yet? Jim Patrick

Re: My 1927 Model T Coupe Restoration
Bruce. Be sure to install the chrome (nickel) plated trim piece on your radiator apron. It makes a real difference in the appearance of the front of your T by framing the radiator in silver, all the way around and across the bottom by joining the legs of the shell. I have posted pictures of a T with the trim and a T without the trim to illustrate the difference the trim makes. They should be available from Lang’s or Snyder’s. The 3 pictures I posted of the trim are of one I sold on eBay last year. Notice the hole on the left to accommodate the brass choke wire. Jim Patrick

Re: My 1927 Model T Coupe Restoration
Bruce. You may find that the right and left rear body blocks will not fit. At least that was the way it was for me. Hopefully, you saved your old rear body blocks so you will have a perfect pattern with which to revise the new ones to the right size. Please see the following thread I wrote back 2010 when I was seeking advice as to why the rear block did not fit, so you can see what I mean. It turns out others had the same problem and it was not my imagination: www.mtfca.com/discus/messages/118802/125665.html. If you find you are in the same predicament, you will need a table saw to revise the rear blocks so they will fit. Good luck. Jim Patrick
PS. It is possible that, in the 12 years since 2010, the problem has been corrected and the correct size rear blocks have been provided. If so, you can disregard this thread.

Powder coated the wheels. One small step, but a huge step for the restoration project!

Re: My 1927 Model T Coupe Restoration
For others' information. Modern tyre changing/mounting machines will accommodate 21" wheels . With a bit of tape on the three mounting claws, powder coating can be protected. The fitter can adjust the machine so no other part ever touches the rim. It will roll the tyre around without ever touching the powdercoat. The tube can then be inserted and the outside bead rolled on in the same manner. No masking neded. No damage to the paintwork and best of all no cussing because of damage. Much safer than wrestling with them yourself.

Too bad your Mom and Dad aren’t here to see your work. They’d be proud. I notice in your first pictures, there is no sun visor. Were you planning to install one? They really are essential to the appearance and accuracy of your restoration. If you need them, I have pictures of the way the sun visors were originally installed, covered and stitchedI, that I can post. Jim Patrick

Jim,
Yes, I will install a sun visor. I purchased the cover from Classtique. I believe installing it on the original frame is going to be difficult. Anything you could provide would be helpful. Put it on a new post.
