Still Looking to Pay It Forward

Post by Sean Butler » Thu May 06, 2021 6:13 pm

We're Baaaaack...

Below is a link to a page of a flyer I made up to bring to local swap meets in the Southern California area, about 6 months before the whole Covid thing hit. Little interest was shown and, well, we all know what's happened since then. Couple it all with a dire family crisis I have had to deal with and I am now back at that same starting point. Please read at your pleasure and see if you may be able to help to pass the torch on.

Matt Madison here there is a program up here in Brooks Oregon at the Northwest Vintage Car and Motorcycle Museum that teaches kids to build Model T speedsters -The speedster program- you might reach out to them ? could work a way to move it up the coast ?

Teach kids how to build speedsters ?
Why ?..Henry never built speedsters and there’s plenty of Model T bodies out there. Heck, I built a hot rod at age 14 - Chrysler hemi, fiberglass T bucket and J C Whitney frame. Nothin to it.
Sorry I saddled you with that nice roadster body and turtledeck Sean. You’ll find the right gaggle of kids who want to learn Model T engineering

Matt 👋

Anything you do to teach the younger generation
to appreciate The Model T is 💯 % OK in my book 📚

Count me in to move this at NC when I have
availability along that route.

check out what they teach - they built speedsters because no one was nice enough to bring a body - they teach the kids the mechanics and upholstery working with a large group of Model T owners

George: Please don’t apologize for being generous. I just wish I had spun the crank on the project a few years earlier when it first came to mind.

Matt: Do you think If I contacted the museum, explained what I have, and asked that instead of a speedster they restore as a factory runabout they would be interested? And George, if they were to agree, would you be okay with this. I don't think any of us wants to see anything treacherous happen to a nice original body and keeping the project together would be a plus.

I would also ask whoever takes the project on to post updates here on the forum as there was a lot of interest a few years back when we were trying to make this happen. Other posts along this line such as Hank Lee’s “T-Tutoring” of those two young fellas a while back seem to have been of interest to all.

I bet we can get room in trailers that will be going up to Spokane for the National tour. I know I'll have a bit of room in mine?

Sean, Let me know if I can help organize part of it down here. The tour will be coming up pretty quick.

So it looks like we have a taker and Black Jack will live to ride another day! I spoke with Don Blain this weekend and he and his group are very interested in taking the project on for their students at The Northwest Vintage Car and Motorcycle Museum and completing it as an authentic runabout. We now have to figure out getting the project from Southern California up to Oregon. My Malibu isn’t quite up to the task...

Sean, I sent you a text. I will have some room in my trailer going to Spokane for the National tour. Give me holler and we'll find out how many others from here are going.

You might want to start another thread for a heads up to others in the SoCal area that might be going as well?

I really need to move this out so a plan is now in place. Tomorrow, I will be renting a UHaul and loading the project in. Wednesday morning I’ll head north to Oregon. Sometime on Thursday I should be pulling into the Northwest Vintage Car and Motorcycle Museum and meeting Don Blain so we can Pay It Forward!

Project has been delivered. I was met by Don and several students who were courteous and helpful with unloading everything. This appears to be a great destination for Black Jack. I regret I didn't take any pics while we were unloading but I was pretty bushed after 25 straight hours in the U-Haul (except refueling stops). Sleeping across the seats at the rest stop at the base of Mt. Shasta was a bit fitful. :)

Thanks, Gene. I, too, would like to see how the project progresses. I know the program starts back up in the Fall when school begins again. I'm not sure how familiar they are with The Forum but I will mention again how we would all take interest in what they're doing. When friends come to visit up here in Washington it'll be someplace we can go for a visit. Also, maybe when Matt pays them a visit he can make some postings?

Good job Sean ! You’ve really overextended to continue your excellent idea of passing the torch to some young uns.
