wood wheel outer bearing race

Hi All,
What's the trick/tool to remove the outer wheel bearing race/cup. Is there a special tool that one needs or can one use a thin drift to remove them. I've had no luck. Thanks in advance.

There's probably a factory tool, but I use a home made drift with a slight downward bend and a sharpened point at the business end.

Older post showing homemade split punch. I’ve used a curved punch to reach the rim of the race and push it out.

If the race is no good, just run a bead of weld around the bearing surface, turn it over and it will probably fall out on it's own as it cools.

John, I believe there are differences in the hubs. The later ones have two reliefs either side of both the inner and outer cups. These reliefs allow a pin punch to engage the cups so you can drive them out. The earlier hubs used different bearings, and the reliefs were not needed to drive them out. If you have early hubs with later bearings, the welding trick mentioned in another post may be your best answer.

Thanks Dan and others. I love the tool that was made from 3/8 stock and would gladly try to make it. Only dilemma for me is that when I look at the outer race, there are no score or burn marks, just polish marks. When I put the new (ungreased) bearing on the race it rides smoothly. Maybe since I have limited time, I'm thinking I may keep the outer race where it is. This is on the right front wheel. I don't know the condition of the left wheel outer race. I'm wondering if these races were replaced at some time in the past. What a bear it was to remove the inner dust shield. It was rusted in place and only came out with heat and some bad words. (Mom would have put soap in my mouth).

John, next time you need to get the inner dust seal out, just drive the inner bearing out. The seal should come with it.

If the race is tight & not pitted or cracked, why change it? As you described it, its newish. BTW have you guys noticed that some non timkin replacement races of the proper part # dont have the proper large radius & wont properly seat down far enough?
