Old Front Axle Repair....Masterpiece or Awaiting a Catastrophe ?

Post by Ruxstel24 » Mon May 10, 2021 7:43 pm

My friend Bill is helping another friend with a 16 front axle. Took the spindle off and found this previous repair to the lower threads. Looks like it was worn almost through.
Anyone else seen such a creation ?
I’d be catching my stomach with my tonsils with every bump if I knew it was there.

Is it some sort of shim, or maybe it was welded up or? Just exactly what is it.

The best I can say without actually seeing it is...
It seems the wedge was fitted to the worn part of the hole and then drilled and tapped.
They are absolutely using another axle. ;)

I m going to call it a “Masterpiece of era ingenuity”!! It looks very well done from the pictures!!
I think it belongs in a museum for that reason!
