1927 Roadster Pickup Spare Tire Carrier
My 1927 Roadster Pickup was apparently ordered with the running board spare tire mount. I'm not sure this was a great idea as it makes the driver side door useless.
It would not be difficult to move the existing mount hardware to the inside of the bed on the passenger side close to the rear of the cab, especially since the wood rails were installed by the restorer. Do you folks think this to be a good or bad idea?
Thanks.

Re: 1927 Roadster Pickup Spare Tire Carrier
The original spare tire carrier for the RPU are like finding hens teeth. I built one for mine " with help from Hank" . The driver door is very hard to get in and out unless you are 12 years old. If the top is down and you can stand up, it can be done. The E brake lever and small distance from steering to door jamb makes it tough.

Re: 1927 Roadster Pickup Spare Tire Carrier
You are correct. That is a major reason not to move it. The driver door would be difficult to use anyway...

Re: 1927 Roadster Pickup Spare Tire Carrier
A hot item indeed. The spare tire carrier...
I sold one a while back for $650. I had many, many inquiries and I'm sure I could have gotten $900+ but it just didn't feel right.

Design a latching, swing-away runningboard spare tire mount. Add a swing-away steering wheel, move the emergency brake/clutch lever to the center, and eat only bird food! Or opt for the deluxe "Genie In A Lamp" accessory from J.C. Whitney. Simply rub the lamp and a genie will appear to lift you into the car, crank it, and then return to the lamp. No tip required! Oilite bushings never need oiling! Stores easily in glove box, turtle, or under seat. Order now.... shipping weight 180 lb.... $39.95... Specify brass lamp, B-287655 or pewter lamp P-287656-P. Not for sale or use in California.

It looks like it could be used for either the de-mountables or the wire wheels. Could you send up close photos of how it mounts and may be some measurements, Thanks jw

Re: 1927 Roadster Pickup Spare Tire Carrier
I grappled with the same decision on my 27 also. Mine came with no spare provision. I looked @ other R/P's for ideas. Went with mounting the spare to the underside of the bed. Its well out of the way. Only down side, it gets some exhaust soot. Wouldnt put a white wall there.

Re: 1927 Roadster Pickup Spare Tire Carrier
I have seriously considered putting a well into the front fender on the left side and mounting the spare there. YES I know that it wouldn’t be “original” but hey it’s my truck!!
I have a aftermarket rumble seat on my 27 roadster! My kids did a lot of miles there!!

Considered that also. Have seen 27 dual side mounts. Like the look. Most folks think my t is an A anyway.

Re: 1927 Roadster Pickup Spare Tire Carrier
Thanks for all the inputs. I am going to leave it where it is as that door would not be usable anyway. Guess Ford realized that fact when they offered an optional tire carrier mounted there to cover the door up!
I did learn that the optional carrier hardware for the demount-able tire in pristine condition such as mine is worth quite a bit. I did not realize that but I suppose that very few of those options were ordered.
So, we will keep the spare there and hopefully the girl also!!!

Re: 1927 Roadster Pickup Spare Tire Carrier
I obtained a set of original drawings for the spare carrier and had a welder reproduce one. Came out pretty nice.
