Magneto gauge ?

Post by BobShirleyAtlantaTx » Sat May 15, 2021 11:14 am

Got this in change yesterday, I was told as a kid to set the mag clearance to- the thickness of a thin dime. Looks like the perfect gauge.

Same for the spark plugs. A worn thin dime. New dimes aren’t allowed!

Not that it matters in the case of measurement, but just curious, what year is your dime? It looks to be early 1900's.

I used to get rhis type of dime from the tooth ferry in the late 40s and early 50s. Now all I get is an invoice.
The mercury head Dimes were made up to about 1938.

Looks to be a 1919 and in that condition worth more for its silver content
"Each Mercury dime contains almost 1/10 of an ounce of silver (0.0723 oz. exactly). As of this writing, silver is currently selling for almost $16 per troy ounce. Therefore, each dime contains approximately $1.20 worth of silver.Jan 30, 2021"

Mercury Dime.jpg
The Mercury dime was minted from late 1916 through 1945. The Roosevelt dime we use today was released in January 1946.

Locally I can get $3 for a silver mercury dime. I have several rolls of them plus some silver Rosevelt ones. I keep them so that I feel that I have some real money.

It used to be that in Nevada it seemed there were more silver dollars than paper ones in circulation. But when the price of silver in coins went above face value and the mint went to clad coinage, all those millions of silver coins went into collections. The new coins were called Johnson money because LBJ was prez at the time, but the change was inevitable. It would have happened no matter who was president.
