Saw a Model T this afternoon-

I was driving my old Corolla on Stanley Street in New Britain, Connecticut today--Sunday afternoon--and saw a Model T. It was a black T, not brass & not Improved Ford, with two brass rings on the headlights & natural wood spokes on the wheel. Body style was regular touring but the top was down.
Not sure if the driver was a member of the Model T forum or not but that car was great to see. It sounded great too--
Any idea whose it was? Didn't know there were T owners in town.

I believe that the last T with brass headlight rings was 1916, but I also believe that a 1916 would have had a brass radiator. Possibly someone put brass headlight rings on a later car? I'll bet Steve Jelf would know for sure.

The car was certainly post-1916 as it had a black radiator -- and pre-1926 as it had no nickel shell. I believe the rings were probably an add-on like a radiator script or something like that. The car was certainly newer than the brass era.
It was a handsome car & I was surprised to see a T in New Britain. The traffic here can be tough sometimes, to the point that I don't feel 100% safe on the road in a "modern" 1990s car, but in a Model T?
It was nice to see the driver was out having fun.

The Nickel shell is not universal for 26-27. It was an option; my '27 touring has a black shell which appears to be original. I too am glad to hear that the driver was out in his T.

Well, I do have the encyclopedia and other references that know. But in this case I don't have to look it up. The last (only) year for brass rims was 1915. From 1916 on they were black, then nickel. But sometimes folks use brass rims on their later cars.
While nickel radiator shells were optional, hood louvers weren't. 26-27 had 18 instead of six (1915-1925). A pretty hard-to-miss dating clue.

'16s did NOT have brass headlight rims. Only a brass radiator.

According to the "Encyclopedia", early 1916s had brass radiators. It states that the "black" radiators didn't come about until AUGUST of 1916

I believe the original posting is with regards to who might own the model T that was seen driving in New Britain CN, not the correctness of it.
