Just starting

Post by IcanTmodel » Fri Jun 11, 2021 12:22 pm

Hate to even use the word, but yes I’m a newbie to T models. Acquired a 1923 needing quite a bit of work and wanted to know if a “checklist” exists.
I’ve helped on a few model a’s and other projects.
Thanks for any guidance or thread suggestions

The first thing to do when asking questions on this forum, would be to show us some pictures of the car, and let us know whether it runs, and then if it does run, some things you have observed about it.
By seeing pictures and finding out a few facts from you, we can assess the car and try to figure what you need to do on it.

The best thing to do to get started is to acquire the Model T Ford service manual and other MFTCA publications dealing with the different aspects of the car. And by the way welcome to the T World!
There is lots of information that’s avaliable for new folks here on the forum and several folks will give you a checklist.
Go to the MTFCA homepage and then go to the resources section and get the vendors catalogs. They usually will send you one for free. Lang’s T parts, Snyder’s, and others have some parts catalogs that will help a lot in identifying parts. You will definitely need to know your T and the manuals and parts catalogs will help a lot.
If you car is pretty much complete try to get it running if possible as it is.
DO NOT start taking the car all apart yet. Lots of first T owners get discouraged after taking their car apart and then start restoring it only to wind up with a pile of parts.

Welcome and read the manuals!

A member search shows seven forum members from Kentucky. The MTFCA has four chapters in the state, the MTFCI has three. A good idea would be to make the acquaintance of some other Model T folks who could take a look at your car and give you advice and assistance. You'll find Model T people very willing to help fellow T owners. Meanwhile, forum members will do their best to assist, just provide more photos and info as Norm suggested.

There is a checklist of things to do on a car to ensure safe and reliable touring. I used it to organize my project and make sure I didn't miss anything. It might be on this site, or maybe someone could post a link? Cheers, Bill

A little OT, but how do you do a member search? I typed in Florida member search and it came back "No matches found".

At the top of this page click on Extra Quick links. Then click Search for members. Type Florida in the location box and click Search.

Dewayne, I tell myself I'm still a newbie to these things and have messed with them for some 20 odd years.
Yeah, start with the dauntlessgeezer pages. Great info.
A service manual helps bunches too.
Mr Cimorelli still kindly offers digital copies to download. http://cimorelli.com/mtdl/servicemanual/default.htm
If you wish to go that route. :) Even an owners manual for your 23 if you look.
On the front pages of this website there is a safety checklist and that's for the touring kind of folks.
Slide over to Resources, it'll drop down and look for the safety inspection (pdf).
Yep, we'd love some pics! Even if a 98 year old pile of...
Then we'll hassle you about the rear axle, the front axle etc etc etc. :)
Since I lost my mind mind, I feel more liberated
