Indian Springs Tour 1968

Post by Rich Eagle » Fri Jun 11, 2021 2:21 pm

The weather today reminded me of tours we held at Indian Springs near American Falls, ID. Starting in 1968 we continued them into the 80s and perhaps beyond. Though the photos are fuzzy they show the Ts that attended and I remember what fun the first several were.
IndSpgs1.jpg
Some older cars from Utah were trailered. The touring at upper right was on a trailer pulled by a 1930 LaSalle. Car games were conducted by our game master wearing vintage fire attire. I pulled my Speedster the 90 miles using a hardwood tow bar that had been on a chassis I acquired. It worked well at 70 mph on the new Interstate but broke easily later using it to pull cars around the yard.
IndSpgs2.jpg
The last photo was from a 1978 event there. We have as much fun touring today but things change and we enjoy it in different ways. The early manager of the facility was an old car guy and very generous to the attendees. Cars were in the 20s and 30s for the most part originally and later the 50s and newer ones began participating.
Enjoy the Ts whenever you can and make it FUN. Hopefully we can do it another 53 years.
Rich

Ha ! I see that trailer investment to tours nowadays far outstretched those of the 60s...Rich, did you actually tow yellow #18 to the tour at 70 MPH on its 4 wheels ??
I don’t know why I turned out this way. My parents were decent people 🤪

Yes George. I was just a kid and fearless. The wheels held up well for years before I put re-spoked ones on it. I've been lucky in many ways. Others disasters have made me more cautious.

This version I built in 1966 in about 4 months. It was a lot of fun but took another 8 years to go through everything I wanted to. It saw the road again in 1978. A much better car and has survived several thousand miles since then with few problems.
The swimsuit still fits.

Ok so how did you tow the speedster without damage to the transmission/engine? Or did you have an auxiliary transmission in it?

Hi Mark. Yes, I have a Warford in it. It's great to have neutral for towing and starting in the winter. I spied it at the scrap yard and paid $5 for it in 1965. Those were the days. :D

Do you still wear your fancy striped outfit when you go for a drive in your t? :)

Too many stripes could be distracting to other drives so I don't. The last time I wore part of the suit was to a Christmas banquet at our local museum a couple years ago. They were having a Steam Punk exhibit.

We dressed in period costumes in the 1960s and into the 70s but not many do that any more. It's kind of a shame. I always enjoy seeing pictures of those who still do.
Thanks
Rich

That's great stuff Rich....thanks for sharing.

Crazy to think that I'm in my 50's but was born a year after the 1968 photos.

I'm digging the accessory tool box in the red F100. I'd love to have one of those in my 66.

WoW! You have taken better care of your 66 than I have taken of my 65. The tool box was handy for a few years but the lock kept rusting shut and the bottom soon rusted out.

The old truck has been good to me but I never really appreciated it.
Thanks for the picture.

Your 65 looks like it has actually earned its keep over the years. I bought mine 11 years ago and it has pretty much lived a life of luxury...sleeping inside a nice warm, dry garage and only doing light duty, like going to the hardware store, etc.

Although I've now outfitted it with a frame-mounted trailer hitch and it will soon be my Model T hauler. It's getting a new windshield and gasket tomorrow morning, then an overdrive transmission. I'm hoping to use it for the Texas T-Party in September.

I've also hopped up the 300 I-6 a bit, with an RV cam, 4 barrel intake and Holley carb, and split dual exhaust....all to make it a more capable hauler....so it can compete a bit better with modern traffic.

That toolbox looks very fixable...nothing a mig welder and some sheetmetal couldn't handle.

Mine's a solid old girl and I love her. She's wearing original paint....even has the factory grease pencil marks on the firewall.

It is amazing how long trucks of that series lasted. I drove mine to and from work my whole career and hauled tons of T parts in it. It was my only "modern" vehicle. I used it to trailer this C cab to Indian Springs one year. I had sold my racer body to Lewis Rector of the Towe collection (Montana) and built this body on the chassis from it. That would have been about 1983.

Folks often said "Hey, your the guy with the old truck aren't you?" I said "Yes" but didn't know which old truck they meant.
