Funky Air Cleaner

Post by Chris Bamford » Mon Jun 14, 2021 1:17 am

We're getting ready for our first tour in a long time (Yay!) and there will be a bit of gravel.

A modern aluminum and foam air cleaner just wouldn't look right on my '26 Touring with its shabby '60s restoration. I put together a pretty effective unit from junk around the workshop — definitely not original but kind of fun and right in my comfort zone of "they coulda done it back in the day".

The photos tell the story. The inlet was cut from a reproduction hot air pipe and sealed to the can bottom. Not easily seen but there is an 18-gauge backer in the can to catch the mounting bracket screws. The air-cleaner bracket is sandwiched between the firewall and firewall bracket, no holes required. Three filter elements can be cut from one '90s Caprice unit. Obviously, a tobacco tin from the '20s or '30s would have been even better.

I LIKE IT! SO COOL!! GREAT JOB!!! I mounted a ford script oil can with holder on my 1915 touring's firewall. When I show my car, I get more questions about the can than anything else on my car. bobt

Super nifty.

I may have to do something like that for my car.

Just keep an eye on it regarding the paper filter becoming impregnated with gas vapor overtime, because you may get one heck of a tiki torch under the hood in a backfire situation.

A little pin hole @ the lowest point will drain off accumulated fuel.

Thanks all for your comments.

I gave no thought to a fire hazard, but with the filter higher and the other side of that window screen it should be OK. A guy could also put a second screen layer in there for more of a flame arrestor. Good suggestion to drill a wee hole at the lowest point (where the hot-air tube enters the carb). A timely discussion to be sure — I've not carried a fire extinguisher in this car and need to mount one before the tour.
