A Worn Texas T Distributor Problem

Post by J1MGOLDEN » Mon Jun 14, 2021 4:00 am

What does a person do to replace a worn Texas T VW 009 Distributor when all the new replacement distributors are made in China and turn in the opposite direction?

I'd install an E-Timer and a set of coils.

Swap meets. They frequently show up cheap. Your worn unit is likely repairable.
I am running one. I replaced the shaft as 1 piece & removed all the advance stuff to run in a bosch front plate.

Ten years ago, I had the part number for the Bosch Shaft Bushing, but I have not been able to find the number or any bushings.

Watch for an Auto-Dis distributor. These were made in Argentina in the 60's and are Bullitt proof. Very easy to remove the auto advance and make manual. I have been running one for over 50 years and the bushings are still as tight as new. Uses Autolite points cap and rotor.

Any VW supplier will have one. Get the right set of points as advertised in TexasT catalog and you should be in business. I’ve done it with no problems!

Since the Texas T turns backwards, you will have to loc-tite the centrifugal advance as they did.

What Henry said is my understanding too and what I was just going to post if he hadn't. Some just wire tie them as long as they are deactivated.
I know the voices aren't real but damn they have some good ideas!

Some pictures of what you have will help and as requested - what's worn.
I am not sure but I don't think that Texas T used an actual VW (Bosch) 009 Distributor but a production made in North America (Mexico I believe).

Generally a worn out distributor is worn bushing or shaft or the worn cam on the shaft that opens and closed the points. The shaft moving around/back and forth, changes the gap between rotor/cap and also the point gap/dwell time as does an uneven worn cam. Those need to be constant to keep the plugs firing all at the same point. Because the shaft is no longer staying centered or uneven worn cam, you can end up with a mixture of dwell times, some longer some shorter. Even a few thousand difference in point gap can change your dwell by a good amount.

I just buy a new 009 head and pinch the advance mechanism from operating. Plug and play
