Vaporizer Carb rebuild and or how to operate (car will not start!!)

Can anyone point me to
1. Someone who rebuild vaporizer carbs or

2. Has any links on how to adjust and clean them

3. Any resource literature

I have a 1927 that the owner did start and drive up on my car trailers. I AM DOING something really wrong as I can not get it to start

I called Snyder's they do not do rebuilds

It just seems like it is not getting fuel

I changed the coils, and plugs I get good spark When I put a few drops of gas in the cylinder it fires for 2 strokes. I did check fuel to the carb

I know how to clean and rebuild NH's but these are a real puzzle I also understand it it somewhat difficult to hook up an NH Really like to get this running before the grandkids get here in 2 weeks !

Dave,
I am certainly no expert as I have only done one, but I will share what I learned. Having worked on a couple of Fordson vaporizers may have given me a bit of an advantage.
First if you are going to rebuild it, remember everything has to be air tight. The fuel is drawn from the bowl up almost to the top of the vaporizer by the suction of the engine. That is a long ways compared to a carburetor set up.
Make sure everything is sealed, I dressed the vaporizer plate and its mating surface on a belt sander to ensure it was flat, then I sealed the plate both sides with a bit of copper "high temp" silicone.
Make sure the throttle shaft is not worn and knurled brass nut is sealing as well.
When we first tried to fire the engine is seems to take a fair amount of choke to get it started. I think because the distance the fuel has to travel.
Once we got it started it settled down and ran surprisingly well.
If you do a google search "mtfca forum vaporizer" you should get plenty of help.
Hope this helps,
Kevin

WOW thanks again to all I did find this info on an old forum post Detailed diagrams on how the carb is put together that explains so so much !!!

This forum is essential to me to learn Look at the color diagrams !

Dave,
Those are the diagrams I used. If you look at them you will see a couple of things that may make for hard starting.
First is the choke shaft, the end of the choke shaft actually partially closes off a passage for free air at starting. Thus drawing more fuel.
The second is the "air damper" make sure that that swings freely, it aids in creating higher suction at low speed and starting.
Best of luck,
Kevin

Be aware, in the color diagram, the bowl washer is inside. Not correct. Exploded view is correct. Under bowl.

Back in the 60’s my old mentor and I cleaned rusty parts in a caustic soda solution in a 55 gallon drum. Worked great on iron and steel. I stripped a vaporizer down and hung it with a wire in the barrel. A few days later It came out beautiful, A very slick clean surface. Assembled it, put in on a rebuilt motor and like you never got it to run, tried everything. Discovered 50 years later, the caustic had eaten the Venturi. Check and make sure the Venturi is in place and not distorted.

One other thing.
The nut that holds the bowl on HAS to be from a Vaporizer. The NH one will not work.

You mean the drain unit? Could you explain why a regular NH drain would not work? Didnt know that, I dont work on vaporizers.

As a vaporizer user for almost 20 years -

My car will always start from cold if I turn the engine over through 4 compression with the ignition off, full choke, first

And it will never start if I don't!

NH draws fuel through a hole on drain plug to main jet. Vaporizer does not. If you put a NH drain in Vaporizer you will flood it.
Look in parts book, 2 different part numbers. Dan

Thank you, I did not know that.

I recently worked on a 1927 coupe for a family that wanted to to get it running again after having been parked in a garage since 1970. All appeared well with the vaporizer carb but I could not get it to run. I eventually found small holes in the vaporizer plate. Once it was replaced the car started and ran well for the first time in 50 years.

Dave:
The fact that the car did run well enough to climb aboard your trailer suggests to me that the vaporizer is a good candidate for a rebuild, but I respect that it's your car, your decision.

Does this '27 have an opening in the block between #2 & #3 cylinders? You need that passage for the throttle rod, p/n 3535b to connect the carb throttle arm to the throttle rod arm (p/n 3524ss) on the steering column, or else some cobbled up linkage over the top of the engine to the NH throttle. The carb throttle rod you ordered passes through that gap between the cylinders. If the block passage is closed off (as it is for some late models), it can be opened, but do so very carefully or you may crack the block. You may also need to create a large hole in the valve galley cover for the throttle rod if it is a late model. The 1927 Ford service manual explains how to do this. You will need to relocate the vaporizer throttle rod arm on the steering column further to the front of the car to align the rod with the passage thru the engine in order for p/n 3535b to align with the nh carb. Alternativey, Lang's p/n 6297 is a bolt on arm that may work, so you can just leave the old riveted vaporizer arm where it is. Good luck, safe driving. jb

James

the man is on a mission...

If the new NH gets rebuilt with a standard commercial float valve, it still won't perform like original. Generally OK, but not as well as when new. But since there are no drivers who drove them when new, who would know?

The Vaporizer when properly rebuilt is just fine and your statement regarding getting on the trailer is absolutely true.

My thanks to all I bought the conversion kit as a backup As I need to get the car running by this Sunday My Grandchildren will be here for 10 days Did not see them at all last summer due to pandemic They could not leave their NAvy Base Want to make sure they can take a drive in the T for memories while they are here Hopefully I can get the Vaporizer fixed but I always want a back up plan :P

For giggles, try both carbs. See which one performs better.
