I would like to import 40-21” drop center wheel rims from New Zealand. The manufacturer suggests using a US shipping agent as it may be less complicated to clear customs. I will use the rims to produce a limited run of adjustable wire spoked wheels for Model Ts. I live in Iowa but could travel to one of the inland ports to pick them up once they arrive. Does anyone have any experience they could share. Thanks, Mike

My wife was in the International shipping industry for 40 + years - she says to locate a reputable freight forwarder and or consolidator.

My experience so far in shipping out of the US and into it from another country is to use one of the Major Transportation Companies DHL, FedEx or UPS. (My recent experiences to ship to the Netherlands via USPS took a month to get out of Chicago onto a plane - was a Small Priority Mail Flat Rate Box.) The reason for using a major firm is that the goods get processed through Customs quickly. Other wise multiple parties could be involved. Also I was just checking into something about FOB ... "FOB is an international commerce term meaning “free on board” or “freight on board.” FOB helps determine when liability, risks, costs, and ownership of goods transfers from the seller to the buyer. The Forum discussions about Blockley tires using DHL sounds like a good shipping firm.

Yes, Kiwi shipping are part of Mainfreight who are quite a large freight and logistics company here.
We have used Kiwi shipping quite a few times to get parts from the USA back to New Zealand.
One thing to note, Feight costs may be quite high at the moment from here due to the demands on shipping due to reduced air freight.

Hey Mike, importing those drop center wheel rims from New Zealand sounds like a large project. Shipping can be painful, but I've heard good things about A1AutoTransport for customs clearance and transport. As for the cost, it really depends on the weight and distance, but you could get a quote from A1AutoTransport to get an idea. As for inland ports, I'm still determining which ones are best for Iowa, but I'm sure there are good options. Good luck with your project, and keep us posted on how it goes!
