Hi all,
Just opened the new (to me) tranny and noticed the slow speed shaft and spring.

Is there something missing inside the spring? On other tranny photos, the shaft is a continuous piece of metal, but not on this one. Is something missing??? Thanks.
John

Earlier T's had a long shaft. Come the era of demountable bands, they were modified by cutting off the long shaft & changing the adjuster from female to male stub as you show. What you have is normal.

The Model T Ford service manual has the information about modifying the slow speed shaft in chapter 13. It’s about adding the newer style transmission bands to keep from removing the entire cover. Lots of T’s had this done and most of transmission covers I’ve seen over the years the slow speed shaft has been cut. I’m sure there are some out there without the shaft being cut but I’ve never seen one.
Some like to remove the cover to keep from bending the bands when installing them with the cover on. You have to be careful and take your time when installing them so not to bend them. Once you do it the first time you can see how to place the bands in and slip them around through the the transmission door. Stuff the trans, cover full of rags to catch any nuts, washers or springs you might drop!! As the manual says use EXTREAM care when doing it!! Follow the procedure as explained about which band goes in first and the order and you should be OK.
