I'm No Stan Howe
In the absence of Stan, do we have anyone in the house that
really knows their Stromberg OF carbs ? I have been running
mine now all summer and love it in many ways, but would like
to better understand how to fine tune it. Any help appreciated.

Re: I'm No Stan Howe
Years ago, Stan sent me a booklet that included a reprint of the original period Stromberg literature. The booklet also contained four pages of original material from Stan based on his extensive experience with this carb. Here is a copy of the original Stromberg literature from Jay Klehfoth, along with scans of the four additional pages added by Stan. Hope these help.

Appreciate this posting of information as I have 2 OF's on the bench that a friend of mine owns and I was attempting to get them operational - one was done by Stan - not sure of the other but both need attention !

I believe Uncle Stan left his mark on not only on the T but all old cars! In his memory..., it is all of our responsibility to keep his legacy alive by helping each other with knowledge gained by him and others who showed us! Travel On!

Here are the four pages rotated and enlarged. You sacrifice a little sharpness when you blow them up, but they're still readable.

Re: I'm No Stan Howe
Brent: I've only done maybe 50 of these (nowhere near what Stan did) but over the years have acquired some knowledge about the usual weak spots and procedures in setting them up. I'd be glad to help with yours so send me a PM or email (or call at 613-258-0336) if you feel I could be of any assistance. They are amazing carbs and once you try one will probably never go back to any stock Ford offering. BTW, the Stromberg RF and Wheeler-Schebler FAX8 are every bit as good and in some ways better than the OF but never reached the popularity of the OF. The biggest problem now is that since Stan's passing (RIP) there is no one I know of making specialized parts for them.

Re: I'm No Stan Howe
Thanks Mark, Steve .....
While the OF made a big difference in "Oomph !" ... it was always
part of the engine build design, combined with the C-race cam, SCAT
crank, and Z-head, at high speed it stumbles. Feels like a miss. But
4 months of chasing around the ignition side has left me fairly certain
that the OF is my culprit, and I'd like to have a strong sense of how the
thing works exactly, to then field fiddle with it, to find its sweet spot.

Re: I'm No Stan Howe
The 'stumble' could be caused by the float level being very slightly out of adjustment. I us a Stan Howe rebuilt OF and all the settings given by Stan for slow speed and high speed adjustments when it was first installed only required minor changes to get it running as I wanted. Subsequently on 2 occasions the float level has required very minor adjustments to eliminate a 'stumble'. Try raising the needle 1/8 turn, if no improvement go a further 1/8. It fixed it for me. I had looked at all the other adjustment with no success until I had a light bulb moment and looked at the float level.
I hope this helps.
Nigel Hugo.

Looking good Scott. I didn't know you were fabricating the OF parts as I've been out of touch lately. Do you do the throttle arm/cam and the economizer arm pieces too?

I don't make those though I'm constantly designing tooling in my head to fold them up efficiently...not there yet, though!

Re: I'm No Stan Howe
A few pages from an OF pamphlet which, as I understand it, was supplied with a new carburetor.
Golly, it is a real inconvenience to be limited to only five images when, in this instance, there are more pages of the pamphlet to be shared. Bill
More to come.
