Lock washers or not

Ok ,so I finished my differential rebuild . Now should I put lock washers on the 7 bolts that hold the 2 halves together?

Sure wouldn't hurt - get a 1/4" longer bolt - it has been my experience that they can loosen up without either Lok-Tite or a lock washer.

I always try to use original Ford bolts on all of my cars. Of the three I looked at, two of them have room for a lockwasher, but a lockwasher was not used, so I didn't use any. All my cars have Ruckstells.

I changed my original post, yes there is just room for them, just enough if they are not too thick.

How about external tooth lock washers. They don’t take up as much room as the split washer. Jim Patrick
Or, you can get the internal tooth lock washer. Good because the teeth are not visible.

Great ideaI am stopping at the hardware store in the AM to get the external lock washers.

They weren't used originally, but I added them after I had to pull and reseal a dripping rear end that had several loose bolts. I used regular split washers, and the original bolts were long enough for them. So far no more drips.

As I under stand Ford started useing lock washers in the early 20's. I try to use grade 5 & 8 bolds & nuts every chance I get for structual application if the heads are visable you can turn or grind them off. The question is how many times have the original bolts been tightened. I never reuse rod bolts replacements are not that expensive. Split lock washers are designed to hold spring tension on the fastener the direction they are bent is not intended to stop the fastener from backing off but to not inpede tightening. Star washers are intended to stop a fastener from vibrating loose by biting to prevent rotation. Every locking device has its specific aplication. Star washers should never be used on battery cables as they collect moisture that will rust and creat issues. Never use nylon locking nuts on any part of a brake system that gets hot. Disc brake calipers, rotors or drums are a no no.
If you add a lock washer to a fastener you have to overcome the spring of the lock washer before you start to torque the bolt so if the bolt is streatched
you will have to add that force to secure the part. Bolts are not that expensive, If in dought pay out.
