Requirements, Light, single axle, open.

Any ideas?

Im looking at using the frame from an old boat trailer with is 4 inch alumin i-beam. Welding the ibeam to angl but welcome some design ideas, the trailer will use brakes and be towed behind the lincoln.

This looked simple and retained most of the trailer 's structure.

There is no boat trailer frame to conserve, the trailer is scrapped to get the aluminum i beams

More what I was thinking

Find an older pull behind camp trailer with an Atwood surge brake.., they work excellent! Been using one for 30 plus years.

As an update I found an old aluminum boat trailer for $50 with a title no less! So some progress has been made.

We had two horse trailers with the Atwood surge brakes. I agree - they worked extremely well. The systems that we had used a 1960s vintage Ford single chamber master cylinder.

Since you'll only have 1 axle & two wheels, don't try for weight reduction and minimal design there! I have a lightweight trailer, like the one you pictured above, but the axle is from a trailer home and it uses 15", 12 ply rated, 120 psi, heavy equipment hauling tires. I've worn them out, but I've never had "tire trouble", (fingers crossed...).

Back in ‘74 when I bought my 27 roadster I had a week to solve the trailer issue. I created a solid axle using some surplus front spindles and used a pair of junk model A frame rails. I had access to some 10” channels from 12 gauge steel and made a pair of tracks. NO springs. I used it for about 20 years with no problems. Eventually sold it (which I now regret)! It bounced a bit empty, but was fine loaded (which it usually was).
Just some thoughts.

I lucked out and picked this one up from a club member. Has a torsion axle, is low & towes like a dream wich is much better than my 18' two axle dove tail. and its over a 1,000# lighter. Craig.
