Key Definitions
On Display – In addition to day-long display hours, display days include access to the Experience the Union Pacific Rail Car. Special-edition Big Boy souvenirs also are available for sale from the merchandise tent. Admission to display days are free (no tickets required), though parking at surrounding parking facilities may involve a charge. These are the best times to see the Big Boy.

Viewing Only – Locations where fans can safely view the Big Boy. In some cases, the Big Boy will be displayed behind a fence or other perimeter. Unlike display days, the Experience the Union Pacific Rail Car will not be available for tours and merchandise will not be sold. Unless otherwise noted on the schedule, overnight stops are "viewing only."

Passenger Excursion – While listed on the steam schedule, passenger excursion tickets are sold by outside entities -- not Union Pacific -- and are not available on the day of the excursion.

No Public Access – Locations where the public is not allowed to view the Big Boy because of safety or security reasons. This usually means the locomotive will be stored within a rail yard or other Union Pacific property where live rail operations are being conducted. Non-employees who access these locations without permission will be treated as trespassers.

COVID-19 Guidelines
Union Pacific is closely following current state and local guidelines and will adhere to them. Our goal is to give everyone the opportunity to experience firsthand this historic locomotive in an outdoor setting, while adhering to proper safety measures. We're encouraging visitors to wear masks and practice social distancing while viewing the Big Boy. For those who enter our walk-through exhibit, Experience the Union Pacific Rail Car, we’re providing free masks and monitoring entry.

It will arrive in Kansas about the time I set out for the OCF. Maybe I should meet it in Salina and head for Detroit from there. :)

Most Model T's had been pitched in a furnace by the time the Big Boys
were erected. The last T made was 13 years old when the first BB rolled
out of the Alco shops.

Funny it's not coming to California at all....you'd think it would since they picked it up in Pomona Ca. I suppose the California EPA wouldn't allow a real live Steam driven engine to enter California, since the agenda is electric vehicles and trains will be the wave of the future....yeah right!

I was lucky and got to see it. I have to think there was at least one model T in the parking lot at the factory where it was built.

I live in Cheyenne, where this "big boy" was restored and it is certainly a sight to behold! Many of the parts that were replaced had to be custom fabricated. It's impressive!

Martynn,
It DID come out to Callifunny, back in the fall of 2019, before the Pandemic. Ran some excursions for the museum that "donated" it back.

Is that the same type engine that they have in the Henry Ford museum? Looking at any of them, and remembering they were made before the days of computer design and were done on drawing boards one page at a time is amazing and humbling!

It looks like they are avoiding all of the crazy environmentalists in Florida, Georgia, and other parts of the deep South. Those progressive administrations hate all of the cool macho stuff like this… ;)

Big Boy always drew a big crowd when it was in Arizona October 2019. Might be a bit hard to get a photo with just a car and the locomotive.
Here is a good drone video of it at Cienega Creek and Eastern AZ. https://youtu.be/12JJHX1i1y0

I thought it came back to Southern California a while back. We may never see it on the Northern part of the State, something about being unable to negotiate the Donner Pass route. There are eight of them surviving, I don’t see any of them listed at the HF museum. They are magnificent to see even when on static display. Someday I will see the living one.

Correct, Henry Ford Museum does not have one. Wish they did! I've seen 2. One in St. Louis, MO and one at Steam Town, in PA. It is humbling to stand next to one. Would love to see 4014 under steam!

In 2019 and 2020 it was in Milwaukee and Chicago. I think if Jerry wants to see it he better make a road trip. I would be surprised if it came back to the Midwest again for a few years, but you never know.

The huge engine at the Ford museum is a Chesapeake and Ohio Alleghany. It has a wheel arrangement of 2-6-6-6 - 12 drivers instead of the Big Boy's 16. Despite this, it is thought to be heavier then the Big Boy and was built for a different purpose. The Big Boy was built primarily for hauling 100-car freight trains up Sherman Hill just west of Cheyanne, Wyoming. The Alleghany was designed as a relatively high-speed locomotive for freight and passenger service over the C and O's mountainous routes. Unfortunately, the C and O chose to use them for heavy coal drags where it was only adequate. They were built by the Lima Locomotive Works, which was sued by the C and O as they were significantly heavier then the specifications called for, and they beat up the track. The C and O won the lawsuit.
BTW: The Allegany was delivered to the Ford Museum under it's own power.

The huge engine at the Ford museum is a Chesapeake and Ohio Alleghany….
BTW: The Allegany was delivered to the Ford Museum under it's own power.
According to the Henry Ford website: (the link is already in this thread)
“ How did they get it into the museum?
1601 was brought up to the Detroit area “cold” (not under its own power) on the rear of a C&O freight train. It took three attempts to get 1601 into the museum. On the first attempt the locomotive derailed on the railroad tracks behind the museum. After removing its main and side rods it was time for a second attempt. This time the locomotive made it as far as the museum’s railroad door but was unable to pass through, even though the door had been widened to accommodate it. The problem was the switch just inside the building—as 1601 started to pass over this switch its articulation caused the cab to swing over much further than anticipated. On the third attempt, following temporary modifications and component removals, the Allegheny finally passed through the door and took its place in the museum’s main exhibition hall.”

Thanks for posting this information. I have always enjoyed steam locomotives but only had the pleasure of riding on two of them. I hope some day they will visit Ohio.

Ken, I heard that they didn't use compressed air but HOT air ... They filled the tender full of politicians !!

I read the one in Omaha was moved using compressed air.

That's how Santa Fe #2542 got to Wilson Park.

IMG_0193.JPG
When the ATSF retired it in 1955 they gave it to Arkansas City. A temporary track was laid down Birch Avenue from the Santa Fe line five blocks away, and the engine ran on compressed air to its new spot in the park. After 62 years it got rather bedraggled, so it was given a cosmetic rejuvenation in 2017.

I have always enjoyed steam locomotives but only had the pleasure of riding on two of them. I hope some day they will visit Ohio.

A place to see steamers in Ohio is at the Age of Steam roundhouse in Sugarcreek.

If you want to run a live steam engine, you need to go to the northern Nevada railroad. There after passing a test they will let you run one 14 miles.Doing that was one of the greatest thrills of my life. To be the actual engineer of a railroad steam engine is something I will never forget
