I am about to buy my first Model T. I want a nice bright flashing red light for the back before I take it out on the busy streets. Can anyone recommend a good one? I don't care if it has it's own battery or if it's hard wired to the car battery (not sure if six or twelve volts)

My wife encouraged me (actually she insisted; turns out rightfully so) to buy a couple of these for the back of our '22 Center Door. The website follows. I purchased two of the F-263 Red with the 2x25 lb magnets for use on the car. The magnets supplied with the original unit are too weak to endure the vibration and bumps of a moving vehicle. You will want the "upgraded" version with the stronger magnets; at least I found I needed them.

It's like looking at a firetruck or EMS vehicle from behind on its way to a call. I put them on the wagging mode. You should see them at night! I also put a piece of tape over the magnet to avoid scratching the paint on the car.

Put a voltage tester on the battery posts and it'll tell you whether its 6V or 12V!

Zillions of different lights out there. I attached LED red bike flashers on the top saddle arms on my Torpedo and touring and I like them.

Check the legality in your area. Red, blue and white flashing lights are usually only legal for emergency service personnel. You might want to look into amber or green. I’ve even seen purple on tow trucks as well.

But is it legal?

I bought a couple of round and triangle LED flashing units at Harbor Freight for a couple of bucks. They are magnetic or have a hook on them. Some have both. I hang them on the rear spare tire. They have several different flashing modes. Small yet very bright. I've used them after dark and everyone saw me. Battery operated.

I use the same type of lights, but yellow.

As others have said, watch yourself in terms of legality. In my state, these kind of things would be illegal for a licensed motor vehicle. Same with a slow moving vehicle triangle, etc.

Fifteen or so years ago I went to the local bicycle shop to look over the lights they offered. I found a set that clamp on to the handle bars or seat post and were battery operated. They had three modes - ON, FLASH & SWEEP. The battery life with ON was short, the flash mode posed legal issues but sweep or Cylon as I dubbed it had long life and even in over regulated SoCal posed no legal issues. I used them for many years and was never stopped. The batteries seem to last forever but I changed them every several years just because.

To get them to grip the fender brace I found an old bit of rubber cushion and cut it to shape. That extra cushion really grabs the brace tightly.

The lights can be removed with just a thumb screw without tools.

The pictures below were shot with the sun shining into the garage and pinging the reflectors. They look like they are on but they are not, its just the sun.

When processing the pictures a few minutes ago I noticed a loose bolt on the bracket. Its amazing how much more my old eyes see on the big computer screen than they do actually looking things over . . .

MY guess is that the police in ANY state would rather have you be safe using so called illegal flashers. It's better then being in an accident. I'd pay the fine and just keep driving.

I have attached bicycle lights that blink.
They are cheap and easy!

I’ve used these rechargeable lights for years. Likely not legal, but I’ve had countless law enforcement follow and pass me. Anything to draw attention is a good thing the few times I’m driving at night. There are multiple settings for how they blink. $6.99 online. Ebay

I have two battery-operated flashers with the brand name "Blazer" on them. They are plenty bright and the magnets are very strong; I don't give losing them a thought. As to legality - I doubt that they would be illegal in any state. Remember, modern cars have 4-way hazard flashers that are usually red in the rear. My native state of Massachusetts will not allow red forward or blue at all, but red at the rear is fine. Massachusetts tends to be a bit picky about such things. As a personal opinion, if a police officer is too stupid to figure out why the flashers are on the rear of your T, He (or she) is too stupid to be a cop.

So if you get rear ended and don't have a sign the Courts may fine YOU at Fault. You could argue having brake lights, turn signals etc but you'll loose because the intent of the sign is to warn other drivers Use of Hazard Lights (red flashing lights) while driving varies by State and driving conditions. The argument is that flashing lights are a distraction to other drivers. While everyone – including private citizens – can buy emergency lighting (amber color) , not everyone is allowed to equip their vehicle with one. That means in some cases, your vehicle may not be eligible for amber emergency lighting. Or, if it is, you may be required to install the lights in a particular way as well as ensure it meets certain safety and performance standards. Fortunately, vehicles with amber flashing lights typically aren’t as distracting as flashing blue or red lighting and thus the color amber is subjected to much less regulation and legal requirements when compared to brighter colors.
