1915 Rear Lamp door doesn't close well.

Hi, this 1915 rear lamp door probably isn't original and doesn't close all the way without forcing it then it pops right back open. I think the tang on the hinge isn't long enough. The brass door itself seems to be the right size. It also does not have a clasp at the top. Suggestions on how to get this to work are much appreciated.

The loop on the hinge attached to the lamp body needs to be bent forward. This will both lift the lamp door and move the hinge point forward. As it is, the lamp door is hinge bound.

Hope this helps.

Take the pin out of the hinge and fit the brass door to the lamp. Then muscle the hinge around to fit the lamp body and reinstall the pin.

After you get the door to close, adjusting that hinge, a clasp or clip to hold it shut can be made from spring wire.

Form the clip to fit across the lamp opening rim, with the wire then bent to a half circle to ride secure in the door opening, in the rolled edge of that brass door.

Might be too small an assortment. Don’t have a lamp door clip to measure right now, but seems they are 1/8” dia or so, made one once using piece of used T seat spring.

Maybe someone can measure the dia. of one and post it to this thread.

Dan, I have never seen anything like the lamp on the left of your photo. What can tell us about it? The other one looks like a standard 1915 fitting.

The one on left is early style E & J #6, used on ‘15 couplet, one on right is typical E & J #8.
