Length of rear axle shaft

Post by Norman Kling » Wed Sep 15, 2021 9:21 am

What is the length of the standard rear axle shaft. This would be the one with the tapered end with a key for the hub. VS the length of a "Wide Track" shaft? This would be the length from the differential to the end of the shaft for one side of the axle.

Thank you Mark, however, I don't find the answer to my question. I need the length from the tip of the threaded end to the inner end where it fits to the washer between the two axles.

Doing the math from the diagram that Mark linked, I ended up with an overall length of 30 & 7/8". I can measure an axle out in the shop later.

Adding up the partial lengths shown on the drawing, I get an overall length of 30.875 inches. However,....

I just measured two new axles I have in my basement and got an overall length measurement of 31 1/8 inch for each. These axles were from Chaffin's and were advertised as being 1/16 inch longer than stock, so that would put a stock axle length at 31 1/16 inch, or 31.0625 inches.

I can't explain why my measurements don't match up with the sum of the dimensions on the drawing. :(

You could try calling Snyders for the length, their website says they offer stock length axles made per the Ford drawing except in more modern steel.

Beware of the reproduction axle shafts made for cars with non authentic so called Rocky Mountain Brakes, which are 1/16 longer.

Thank you. I don't need new shafts, but I was wondering whether he might have a "Wide Track" car. The front axle seems to be long. The front wheels come right to the edge of the fenders. The rear axle might be standard and front a wide one?

Front axle description sounds like wide track. Right out the fender edge with wide track fenders. Wide track fenders??
Tires would stick out past fender edge with standard fenders & wide front axle.
My fuzzy head says rear axles are each 2" longer. Fenders are only 1" wider each. On 14 & later, fender edges are further out than running board edge. Non wide, fender & R/B edges are in line.

Period Parts books, rear axle 31-1/16". A wide track front axle would put the front wheel about 1/2 it's tyre width out side a standard fender.
