W. W. Pickerill was an entrepreneur at the beginning of the last century. He has the distinction of owning the first motorized conveyance in Tacoma WA, at that time the 2nd largest city in the state:
Worthington Pickerill in some ways reminds me of Professor Hill (Robert Preston) in "The Music Man.
This fellow came into the city of Tacoma at the turn of the last century, and helped establish the 2nd largest city in Washington State (in 1900) as one of the leading automotive cities in the west.

Like Professor Hill, W. W. Pickerill was sometimes referred to as "Professor." Here we find him teaching music in 1896 and 1898 Tacoma:
By 1899, he's the proud owner of a used Locomobile purchased from a Seattle resident:
In addition to his many other endeavors, in 1904 W. W. becomes part owner and full time operator of Tacoma's first Ford dealership. Below, he leads three entries in Tacoma's first auto parade, 1904:

In early 1905, Pickerill and Washington Automobile Co. commit exclusively to Ford Motor Company, announcing in February that the entire 1905 Ford line will be offered:
During the first half of 1905, the local newspapers report Fords being sold in Tacoma:
By the end of June, 1905, The Washington Automobile Co. has had good success selling Fords. The two articles below report that of 23 cars registered to residents of Tacoma, 10 are Fords:
Once again, the annual Rose Parade comes around. This time, W. W. Pickerill decorates a Model B:
This photo shows the increased number of auto entries in the parade. The Ford "B" can be spotted by the big swan on the hood:
Next, 1905 continues to be a big year for Fords and automobiles in general in Tacoma.

Oh Rob, that was just naughty inserting Preston's character into this mix. I had to look. Man, can he spit out the lyrics!
Instead of Curly, I would've liked to play Professor Hill in my heyday locally. I'd rather it'd be Capt. Corcoran from Pinafore.
Doggone it and eh hemm!
Oh gosh, look at the B's. Drool...
And Mrs Pickerill looks like she chewed his XXX whether he needed it or not! Yikes. Shoot, she's a red head. Yikes.
Double doggone it! Shouldn't have interrupted you Rob. The posts are...well...titillating.

Rob,
Thanks for posting these stories of past automobile owners and their adventures. It's like stepping into a time machine and walking down the street and into the dealerships and personally knowing each and every one of them. And now we get to participate in the rose parade.

In the spring of 1906, W. W. Pickerill again creates a first, this time selling the first commercial vehicle in Tacoma:
Meanwhile, W.W. is advertising Ford's new lineup:
And for the first time, the Tacoma Automobile Club, and W. W. Pickerill make a national automotive magazine:
And we have photos of W. W. placing the fist traffic signs in Tacoma. Driving a Ford Model F, Pickerill posts signs limiting speeds to 10 mph uphill, and 4 mph down:
Next, the 1906 models arrive.

Thanks Pat. It seems the auto, and Ford both took off in Tacoma quickly.
Meanwhile, W. W. and C. M. Seelye patiently await the the first Model K scheduled to arrive:
A little new "fluff" that appeared in the Tacoma newspaper struck a note with me. It's about a Rhode Island dealer, Dutee W. Flint taking his honeymoon in a Ford. This happens to be the same dealer who sold our Model K Roadster to the original owner, C. P. Knight in 1907. The Knight family owned our K until 1964. This article doesn't mention it, but Dutee took his honeymoon trip with a Model B:
Meanwhile, we learn that Richard Vaeth, a prominent Tacoma resident, has sold his Ford Model B, and is planning to build a grange to house his new machine:

Bud, my pleasure.
The first Ford Model K don't reach market until mid April. By May, Ford is cranking them out, producing over 80 in May and over 100 in June. Meanwhile, production problems cause the much anticipated Model N to be delayed until mid July.
We learn about Richard Vaeth's garage, and what "machine" he chose:
The story and photo were picked up by "The Automobile:"
However, this isn't the first Tacoma Model K to achieve national prominence. That distinction belongs to C. M. Seeley:
"The Automobile"
It appears Washington Automobile Co. and W. W. Pickerill are off to a good start in Ford sales for 1906. To put the sale of a Model K in context, at 20-25% commission (based on volume sales) the sale of a 1906 Model K equated to about $13,000 to $15,000 in todays dollars to the agency.

Re: This ones going to take a while. 1899 t0 1927, Locomobile, Thomas, Ford, and then, the unthinkable
Opps, found a rabbit hole. I'll get back on this after reviewing "new" information. I should have looked before starting this thread, but it turns out Trent Boggess Ford Ledger database includes the Washington Automobile Co.. Why didn't I look before....?
Soooo, long story short, I believe we can break down the amount Washington Auto made selling Fords for 1905-1908. Meanwhile, a few tidbits as we roll toward 1907. In late October 1906, Washington Auto reports the first consignments of 1907 cars should arrive in a few weeks. This coincides with Trent's database, and I'll have more on that later. The article also reports six cars were sold last week, five runabouts and one six cylinder.
On December 30, 1906, Wash. Auto reports 1907 cars have reached the agency, all runabouts. This squares with the Ford ledger, with only runabouts sent prior to late January 1907. The article goes on to report "the larger models have now been shipped." As it turns out, the ledger only reports one Model K reaching Tacoma in late January, but again, there will be more on this.
The second portion of the article mentions the price increase of the "six cylinder" to $2800, as well as Henry Ford issuing a challenge to any car maker with models up to $5,000 competing with his six cylinder, and expands the same challenge to "back his four-cylinder runabout against any machine in the runabout class in this country or in Europe."
Meanwhile, using Trent's ledger information, I believe we'll be able to determine how much Washington Automobile Co. made on each model for the years 1905 - 1909.
Now, back to my rabbit hole.............

Re: This ones going to take a while. 1899 to 1927, Locomobile, Thomas, Ford, and then, the unthinkable
1907 appears to start the way 1905 and 1906 ended, with growing sales ahead. Now, armed with Trent Boggess' FMC ledger database, we're able to learn how many Fords Washington Auto Co. obtained from Ford, including dates and models. On February 10th 1907 the local newspaper reports Washington Auto is expecting 5 car loads of Fords.
Trent's ledger database indicates that 12 Model N were received by Washington Auto on February 21, 1907 (three carloads).
Another 11 N and 1 Model R was (three more carloads) on
Tacoma is planning it's first annual Car Show for April, 1907. In addition to runabouts, the ledger show's two Model K have also arrived at Washington Auto. Below is a portion of the article describing the show, including information about and a photo of the Ford booth, writing "The Washington Automobile Company has played up a great six cylinder Ford touring car finished in red."
Below, the newspaper photo of the Ford booth, along with Trent's ledger information on the two Model K delivered to Tacoma:
1907 is Ford Motor Company's best year to date, as the auto maker will produce the largest number of automobiles in the world and surpass one million dollars in net profit. I'll recap where Washington Auto Co.stands in terms of sales up to 1907, and begin the the story of W. W. Pickerill's unraveling with FMC.

One last example that W. W. had it all. He led the largest auto parade seen in Tacoma yet to begin the 1907 auto show, "his great six cylinder Ford touring car in the lead:"
After selling two Ford Model A in 1904, 1905 and 1906 sales had led the city dealers. Below are recaps of Washington Automobile Company's sales (courtesy of Trent Boggess ledger research and Carlton Pates book). Led by strong sales of the B in 05 and K in 06, Washington Auto and Pickerill appeared on the way to continued success.
What could go wrong from here?

1907 moves on after the Tacoma Auto show. Below, W. W. Pickerill and his fellow Model K owners plan a Century Run in May, calling it the "Ford Six-Cylinder Run."
A few weeks later, a group of automobilistes drive to the state capitol of Olympia for their auto show, including Pickerill driving is Ford:
But, there are other things afoot. In March, the Washington Auto Co. announced they were taking on the Jackson automobile:
As it turns out, Pickerill and Washington Automobile Company will only purchase four more Fords for remainder of 1907, two Model R and two Model K:
Below is the photo that initiated my interest in Worthington W. Pickerill and Washington Automobile Company. Mr. Pickerill is seen driving what is probably K Roadster #834:
Next, the summary of 1907, as the Model T era looms ahead.

Re: This ones going to take a while. 1899 to 1927, Locomobile, Thomas, Ford, and then, the unthinkable
Washington Auto Co. and W. W. Pickerill don't buy another Ford in 1907. As a result, although Model N sales increased, the lower number of large car sales combined with no Model F style mid-size touring offering cause a significant drop in revenue for 1907:
In fact, 1908 is even worse, with Washington Automobile Co. buying no Fords, according to Ford ledgers (courtesy of Trent Boggess). The company did sell two apparently left over Model N's for a local contest, giving away a Thomas 40 and two Model N:
By March, 1908, Washington Auto Co. advertises a clearance sale. Shortly after, the business advertises a Ford Model F and Model N for sale:
Worthing does make the news again in 1908, but not for his automobile business:

W. W. Pickerell doesn't sell any new Fords in 1908, and the only headline he makes is creating a 200 acre prairie wildfire due to burning off an area to golf on.
In late 1908 he makes one more attempt to sell Fords, advertising the new Ford Model T. However, Trent's ledger database indicates Washington Auto made no sales of the new model. Pickerill will sell one more Ford, but that will come at a later date, and it won't be the new Model T:
In early 1909 he adds to his holdings, purchasing a cigar store and pool hall, saying it "will be a gentleman's resort:"
In late 1909, Pickerill is charged with speeding and causing an accident with a horse drawn conveyance.
The fine is announced for "the well known automobile man." $100 is about the equivalent of $2,500 in todays dollars:
It may be about time for the "automobile man" to move on from Tacoma.

Great reading Rob,
Sounds like Mr. Pickerell is getting too big for his britches!
Rob,
I think you would look spiffy with a grey striped driving coat and bow tie like Mr pickering is wearing in the picture you posted above!

Re: This ones going to take a while. 1899 to 1927, Locomobile, Thomas, Ford, and then, the unthinkable
Perry,
Thank you, and yes, that would be quite a dapper suit and striped coat.
This story is finally winding down. In 1911, W. W. Pickerill gets into a few more scrapes with the law in Tacoma, this time for having minor boys in his pool hall:
And finally exhausts his appeals on the $100 speeding fine:
As I mentioned earlier, he does sell one more Ford, but not a Model T, and not in Washington state. In March, 1911 he's advertising one more Ford six cylinder for sale, at a hotel in Southern California.
Next, the rest of the story. New state, similar results, and a recap.

Worthington W. Pickerill moves on, landing in Prescott, AZ by 1919. In July 1921 he opens "the largest dancing pavilion in northeast Arizona" and refreshment booth."
And now, the "unthinkable." He's also a Chebby dealer..........
In 1926 the Tacoma "News Tribune" ran a story on W. W. Pickerill and the beginning of the automobile in Tacoma.
"Pick had come out of the Klondike with money and a mandolin."
The story went on to report about his auto business, adding "Pickerill bought a Ford - a red and racy Ford that boasted six cylinders."
As my dad used to say, "that's all she wrote."
