I have pulled the fuel tank and its full of tar. I have read por15 is the stuff to use. Is there anything else or is that still the best to use?

I started pulling apart the tap and the filter is stuffed. Can I buy a replacement?

I was also installing the rubbers on the door jam. Where do the square ones go?

I have a 1926 coupe.

POR15 might be okay to use, but only AFTER the "tar" has been removed. POR15 will not remove it. Chances are, after the "tar" is removed, the tank will be okay and won't need the POR15.

When i say tar I'm meaning the varnished petrol. It goes rock hard. The only way I could open the cap was to heat it up.

Yes, I undersatnd that. Still needs to be removed and POR15 won't do it. It will only cover it up. It's essentially petrol-proof paint.

Since you have the tank out of the car take it to a radiator shop and have it boiled out. Some shops have a vat they can put the tank into to do that.

Many of the Model T suppliers have replacement parts for the sediment bulb.

Do NOT use POR 15 paint! I don't think anyone has ever suggested that.

I personally have used the POR 15 GAS TANK SEALER KIT

this stuff is GREAT and comes with a cleaner, an etcher, and a sealer. I have lots of experience with the product over the last 8-10 years with excellent success and zero failures.

there is a difference between the paint product and the gas tank sealer product. Do not mix the two up.

Try detergent, water, and acetone mixed to get the residue out of the tank. Plug the outlet and put in 2 gallons of water, 1 quart of acetone, and a liquid dishwashing detergent, like Dawn. Put the cap on loosely and shake the tank several times over several hours, then let it sit overnight and shake it some more. If the residue is dissolved, dump the solution in a safe place, remove the outlet plug and cap, and flush the tank with a garden hose and nozzle, then rinse it with a couple of quarts of rubbinbg alcohol, shake all liquid out, and set it out to dry with all plugs and caps removed. Once it is completely dry, use compressed air to blow out any loose residue, then use a mirror in bright sunlight to check the interior for deposits, rust, etc. I'd be cautious about having the tank boiled out. I've had one tank destroyed by experts at a radiator shop. The tank is probably made of terneplate steel, and a radiator vat solution may damage it. If the tank needs coated inside, use what Scott suggested.

Tern plating is just a coating on the steel used to prevent rust, not a type of steel. Yes, the tern plating can be removed when cleaned at the radiator shop along or other aggressive acid type cleaning. That is why the tank is sealed after you get it back. If the tank got holes in it after cleaning, it had issues in the first place. The tern plating was already gone in places and allowed rust to form.

The Marine Clean sounds good. I frankly was not aware it existed and was concerned for you when my mind went to the Paint version of POR15.

I used the three part POR 15 kit with great success. Something else you might consider if the muck on the inside is really thick is having a radiator shop boil it out first - then the POR kit.

POR15 cleaner/degreaser used to be called "Marine Clean". Look at the date of the post you went to: 2017

They have changed the name, but it is still the same thing.

You don't have to take good advice given to you, but so far, your research for anything else is circling you back to the POR15 gas tank sealing kit, or at least one of its constituent components.

Whatever you settle on, good luck. Some choices will take more luck than others.

Some radiator shops can hot dip the tank then apply ethanol resistant red coat to the inside of the tank. You will have to repaint the outside. Be sure to tape off the threaded reas before the shop red coats the inside. It is hard to get out of the threaded parts.
