Tires Where are they??!!!!

Post by Mopar_man » Fri Oct 15, 2021 2:53 pm

So I been looking around for tires I need 4.40/4.50X21's. I'd like to get Black walls and so far have come up with none. I've tried the following:

Coker
Lister
Universal
Lang's
Performance Plus Tire
Summit Racing
Gas Light Auto

Any others I should be checking?

I noticed Snyder's wasn't one of the vendors that you have tried. They sell Goodyear which are advertised to be made in the USA. If in stock, you can buy them from Snyder's, or buy them direct from their supplier, KELSEY TIRE CO. in Camdenton, MO.

The Goodyear tires that Kelsey Tire sells and that Snyder's sells are true 4.40x21 size tires. I have a set that I bought from Snyder's to put on my 27 coupe, so they are not for sale. If you have no luck, anywhere. Contact me. I have some new, never mounted 4.40/4.50x21 Firestone blackwalls. They are older stock, but have been kept in a dark, temperature controlled environment, all their life; no age cracks, whatsoever. The "kicker" for you would be the shipping from Texas to Virginia.

There are some European Classics listed on the auction site. I have no connection with the ad, and no experience with these tires. https://www.ebay.com/itm/183926862676

Well I found some tires. Lucas. They may not be the best but I currently have some on the car that were bought in 1974 and are probably not that safe.

https://www.snydersantiqueauto.com/prod ... &cat=41909

After calling just about everyone you suggested Snyders was the only one that had any.

I know I may have to replace them sooner than most but a least I'll be riding on rubber that's not hard as a rock.

I started calling around this week for a pair of 30x3 and 30x3 1/2 for my new restoration project. Lucas, Coker and the major suppliers have no 30x3 tires. One place had some 30x3 1/2 tires. I was told by Lucas and Coker that it will likely be between February to April before they get any. One of them said that they are waiting to get container access to get them sent from the factory in Vietnam. Good thing I don't need them right away

For 30 x 3 and 30 x 3½ I would try Blockley. I will go with those when it's time to replace my current tires.

Here is a tip when they tell you they only have 2 tires ask if they could go check. That's how I got mine. The computer said they only had 3. When she went to look they had 5.

What experience do you seek. I have a customer car with them now. Only a few miles clocked.

The Distributor of Antique Good/Year Tires is the Kelsey Tire Company 1190 East Highway 54 Camdenton, MO 65020 Got tubes and flaps from them too'. The are sold trough other suppliers like Summit - cost more but offer free shipping (actually dropped shipped from Kelsey in MO
Because I got the flaps and tubes at the same time total cost was was less by buying direct from Kelsey

From my perspective, no one in the states has had them on the road long enough yet for a reliable comparison. I would think it will take at least 2 years, given the relatively few miles most people put on their cars anyway.

Seamus has put a decent amount on them. One would assume he'd be a good resource for feedback since he puts more miles on, at faster speeds than most. I'd reach out to him if you truly were serious about knowing more.

Buy Dean a set of tires and ask him how long they last. He puts a lot of miles on gravel and dirt roads. He also tracks everywhere he drives and how many miles he puts on.

Checking current Lucas prices for 30 x 3½ clinchers (beaded edge tyres), I find that Blockleys are priced about $43 more than Wards Riversides, about $5 more than Universals, and about $19 less than Firestones. So they cost 27% more than Wards. If they last 28% longer, or more, they are cheaper per mile.

But I agree, it's unlikely that anybody in the States has been running Blockleys long enough to know how well they last, especially the 30 x 3 which just became available this year.

That price comparison is assuming that there is no tire price increase once they can get shipping arranged. I've seen more than one news story commenting that shipping container costs have increased from $2k per container last year to $21k this year, so I wouldn't be surprised if the tire costs for those made in Vietnam don't go up once they are available again.

I decided to pull the trigger and order a pair of 30x3 and 30x 3 1/2 tires from Blockley today. They processed my order and I have the DHL tracking info already.
