Recently, a lot has been discussed regarding battery boxes. To change it up a bit, the original wooden case I have not been able to find or am a wee late in responding to classifieds. I looked at previous mtfca posting regarding the subject with out success. I am looking for the dimensions of the wood case, so as, to build one for my 26 knowing the plastic ones are rare. It will give me a fall project.

Metal Handle: A,B,C,D and *(arc angle)
Wooden section: E,F,G,H and I
Bottom of case: J, not pictured. Also, need how it is attached.

I have attached a diagram of what is needed.

I'm sure you know that the number of dovetails is critical for this type of reproduction. These links have some close up pictures.

I have looked at many, many threads representing this topic finding what is necessary to complete the task with one exception and that is actual dimensions.

As for how the bottom connects, it appears the four sides have "slot" mortices along the bottoms. The bottom has "continuous" tenons on all four sides. I expect three sides were assembled, the bottom slid into the assembly and the fourth side attached last. From some of the photos in the posted threads, I can see two screws on the sides put in from the outside to hold the sides and bottom together. While the box joints were most likely glued, I believe the bottom may not have been glued to allow for expansion/contraction due to humidity changes. Thus, the strength components being the mortices, tenons, and screws for the bottom. This construction looks to be the same as many furniture drawers of the period.

I'm not going to measure these parts for you. But just think. The wood battery case, and the newer style hard rubber case both go into the same battery box, so it seems to me the outside dimensions would be the same.

Dude, I'm ah-thinking! Always! I've figured out a few of the measurements. Kinda figured these measurements might have been around here for a spell. Someone might have built these things before and have put the time in with the tape measuring device. Kinda sort of! Maybe! I've never seen one of those boxes. Just looking for help there fellas.

I remember this thread. I even responded. It escaped my memory. Must not be think'en! Definitely, brain dead!

Thank you, all who have responded. I, at this point, have enough information to build one except the wood. Remember the treewood, firewood and driftwood saga. Oak has to be the choice.
