Sodium bearing grease

Post by Tmooreheadf » Wed Oct 27, 2021 5:38 pm

In a recent publication, a technical writer says he recommends sodium grease for front and rear wheel bearings on a model A due to its fiberous properties. Reading an MSDS sheet, it indicates sodium grease works well on slower turning bearings where high heat is not indicated. However, sodium greases do not like water. Some Articles indicate water turns sodium grease into a soapy solution. I’ve always used lithium compound or heat temp greases for most applications. Does anyone have an opinion on sodium grease? Due to its stringy texture, I wonder how it would work on a u joint? No heat, very sticky and I wonder how it would help holding oil from coming through a u joint?
Thanks

That sounds like Texaco Marfak grease. It was widely used in decades past. I don't know if it is still available.

I would avoid it due to its inability to survive immersion

any waterproof NLGI 2 grease is fine

It is still available cause I bought some before I realized the issue with water. I’m still going to try it in the fourth main.
