Wire wheels and hubs question

Picked up rear end that was made into a trailer , has decent wheels and hubs , my question is , how come the drums sit so close to the plates ? Would the brake parts keep them out where they should be if they were present ? I haven’t opened up the home made cover that closes the driveshaft area up and I assume the rear end to be parts , no experience with wire wheels as the cars I have are are wood spoked . Definitely T wheels etc , couldn’t pass on it for $40.00
Thanks

Because you have wire wheel/hubs mounted on a small drum rear end, the backing plates are in different places on the 1926/27 rear ends. They were moved back towards the center. Even if the guts are shot, great deal at $40!

If they are actual Model T wheels and in good shape, you got a smoking hot deal. Model T wheels for the price of Model A wheels.
The only reason I can think of for that position of the drums would be shortened axle shafts.

Dittos.
Is that a 15 or earlier rear end? Smooth backing plates? Double score!?

Yep, 1915/16 diff. Don't know about the spring thou, will need to see some photo's of the top of the leaves to tell.

Thanks for the info about the differential , the drums and rims are what I was after ,now to luck into a set for the front , lol !! the springs don’t look familiar to me , and not sure what the crossmember is from , think it’s bigger than a tt , possibly an A ? At any rate , I will most likely never own a ‘15 , but the rear differential will go into the barn to sit with the rest of the parts until someone can use it !!
