my 24 touring has 4 mid 50s kw coils. i took it out for a spin and had a sudden skip. i found that it ran better on the 6v battery and got home.
switched back to mag. and found that no 4 was not firing switched the coils around and the problem moved so it is a coil problem. i did the
light bulb volt meter magneto test and have good voltage. the coil that is not good has a bigger blue spark at the coil itself than the others.
do i need a new capacitor
why does it work on battery
any advice would be great. philip

Re: ignition problem
The blue spark at the points would make me suspect the condenser

Re: ignition problem
Philip, Considering that your coils are from the '50's, they probably should be rebuilt with new capacitors & points and properly adjusted for best performance. Coils sometimes fire on battery and not on mag due to improper adjustment. You should also check your timer to see that it's clean and not excessively worn. All the wires and contacts in the coil box should also be shiney clean to make the best contact.
