FJ - What Lies In A Model T Owners Garage ? <> You Won't Believe This Discovery !

My friend Joe told me he bought a car from some Model T folks in Cave Creek, AZ.
I offered to haul it the next time I was in the area.
As it turns out - if I am telling the story correctly ...
Many years ago - a doctor had an early brass car around Cave Creek, AZ.
He was out for a ride one day - spooked a lady on a horse who fell and broke her arm.
The doctor fixed it - then put the car in storage.
Some years late - Doris & Jim ( active Model T owners and tour participants ) - bought the car.
They also live in the Cave Creek area.
They drove the car on local tours.
If you know the Desert Heat of the area - you can imagine what happens to a vehicle
left exposed to the sun even for one Summer.
This 1911 Maxwell Touring Car is - in my humble opinion -
completely original .
The tires - seat cushions - rear carriage light - cooling hoses - spark plugs have been replaced.
It has an original tool box with original tools.
The original side curtains were in the tool box.

There is research to do.
The Dots need to be Connected.
Not sure how Maxwell is regarded in Concours Circles ....
The Little Details on this Survivor are just remarkable.

Doris & Jim took this to a National Maxwell Meet years ago.
It was regarded as the most original unrestored example present at the Event.

That is extraordinary....so mnay details for the eye to dwell on.
I could sit in a shop with an adult beverage and stare at the details on a car like this for hours.

FJ.. Is that car blue, or black? Did it have any cream pin-striping on the body or chassis? Are the wheels natural in finish? Post more pics if you have them. Of an interesting note, that car is only about 80 units off from mine.

Great photos Jim, wonder what the value of something like that is.
Historical Value

The only thing that really interests me is historical value.
Monetary value should reflect true historical value - but that is not always the case.
I have always found vehicles like this far more fascinating than restored examples.
If you allow it - a car like this will tell you quite a story .....

The original side curtains for the original top were found
neatly folded in the bottom of the original tool box.
They look brand new ....

Your beautiful pictures are reminding of this 1906 Maxwell. I'm sorry my 40 year old photos aren't near as good.
It was offered for sale for $6,000 about 1979. I could not buy it but sure thought about what a great car it was. I watched it be restored and change hands several times. A friend observed that everyone who owned it had died. Then he was killed in an accident. The widow who owns it now claims it is very rare and certainly worth a million dollars.
Still can't afford it.

I think some cars should not be “ restored “.
If a car “ lives “ to be 108 years old ( like this one ) ....
It should be - recognized - respected - rewarded.

There's one in an antique shop the next town over from me... looks to be about the same vintage as your pics of the green one by the radiator silhouette. It was for sale on ebay a while back but it got no bids. Neat cars!

"I think some cars should not be “ restored “.

And revered.
Yet it will happen again. We've all seen pictures of cars or whatever it was that were very, very nice but the new owner felt it should be restored.
30 years ago, I did that to a very nice but rusty 91 year old tractor now and I wish I hadn't. Ya cannot replace original fender decals.
Even 20 years ago, the notion was out about an old gas engine "Put that paint brush down and show it in its working clothes." and still exists even stronger now out in some of the old tractor world to actually highlight fixes, cobble jobs and updates to keep them running.
I happened upon a special, very small part of history that cannot be painted until the chassis is brought back to correct.
Don't know IF I want to do that.
I missed out on an unrestored Ford model N (basket case) a couple of years ago... Lesson learned. Prob'ly not be to again. The elusive unrestored N but I live and learn.
Fantastic story and pics FJ! Thank you! Beautiful Maxwell.

I whole heatedly agree. The beauty of original paint, aged brass and even a little dust and dirt is truly a treasure. Keeping them that way is always a challenge. Making them mechanically sound is hard to do without disturbing some of that. Putting them in a hermetically sealed bag could be the answer but then how well could we see them. I saw a fantastic 2-cyl REO in a private museum last month that had nearly perfect original paint and upholstery. They keep it dusted but will not touch it in any way. Pictures were not allowed but being able to stand there and look at it was unbelievable. Spending an hour with it was something I will always treasure.
There are some great photos of cars like that around and I hope folks will keep taking pictures of them and sharing them like like FJ and others do.
Thanks again.
Rich
