Emergency flashers: is the diagram wrong?

It appears to me that if the emergency circuit has a simple single pole on-off switch, the right/left switch will activate both sides together. I think the emergency switch needs to have two separate terminals going out, with no connection between them. Is that right?

Steve,
I believe you are correct. The emergency switch should be a double pole single throw switch with the right side lights on one output pole and the left side lights on the other output pole with the wire from "L" to both the input poles on the switch. This way the right and left side lights are NOT connected through the emergency switch when the emergency switch is open/off. But, ARE connected when the emergency switch is closed/on.
The way the diagram shows as drawn, All the signal lights will come on with emergency switch AND with the turn signal switch whether the turn signal switch is on for left OR right.

There are various ways depending on the flasher. NOTE: Two fuses!

The original circuit will work without that added wire.
You just have to use the turn signal switch set for those left turn blinkers and then the emergency switch will power the right turn lights in the circuit.
The blinker rate will be faster with both light sets selected.
A separate flasher was normally used for all lights to flash, and a different circuit was required and not shown here.
The early flashers contained a metal strip of two metals fused together.
The expansion rates were different, and the current flow warmed the metal strip to open and close the circuit.
More current made the flasher work faster.
There are new flashers with a different style modern construction that are heavy duty and cost extra.
They will always flash at the same rate regardless of the current flow.

If you don't have a turn signal controller with 4 way flashers built in there is a very simple solution. With a single pole single throw switch (simply on/off) run a wire from one side to the switch, then from the switch to the other side. with the switch in the off position, you have normal turn signals. When you switch to on and then activate either left or right turn, you get 4 way flasher function. I've done this several times for motorcycles.
