Speedster Reunion (Lincoln, NE), here I come (I hope...)

Post by Rob » Fri Apr 05, 2019 4:31 pm

Peter and the guys are coming along with the Ford Special racer. Just received pics of the auxiliary exhaust ports sliding rail and foot control (to the right of the steering column in the first pic):

Pedal and brake/high handle are almost bent and extended into place, and the steering column has been extended:

The way it'll look from the passenger seat:

This 1911 photo shows one of the Ford Specials on a hill climb in France. I believe the exhaust ports are open:

Did you remind Peter that you have a deadline to meet? Late June. :)

Dave, at the risk of irritating him, I have. Bottom line is I don't want the project rushed, but hope it's ready in time. It's that time of year when we get excited to get them on the road.... :geek:

Rob,

Even if your speedster isn't ready are you going to take your drone and do some overhead shots? I can't wait for the weather to change so you start posting videos of your pre-T's .

Perry,
Good idea. It's been such a long winter I hadn't thought about it. Yes, I'll drone along.... 8-)

We've come to a conclusion on the color for the racer, all white. Articles and photos indicate most of them were white or gray, although the one sent to France was painted dark, including the radiator.

Ours was probably one of two sent to New Orleans in February 1911 for the Mardi Gras Speed Carnival. I think this one, captioned as the day before the first race (the meet ran three days, and Ford cleaned up) is the smaller engined racer that ran in the 161-230 cubic inch races. Our motor/racer was probably the one running in the 231-300 cubic inch class, but I suspect looked similar. The motor/hogshead are set back farther than a 176 cu. in. T, but not back as far from the firewall as ours:
