Those pictures remind me of the creaking and popping of old wooden floors and the scent of "floor sweep".

ZINK Motors in Appleton City, Mo began selling Fords in 1916 and continues to do so to this day. Operating out of the original "FORD" building the service area was located on the 2nd floor accessible via a steep ramp. The service area is now a museum featuring original Ford tools and related items. Annually an old Ford open house is held with a number of enthusiasts displaying their cars. One such vehicle is an original 1919 TT which was purchased new at ZINK. The truck has remained in the same family and although never restored is fully operational, runs and drives. This year the open house will be held on July 9th.

I wish I could find a photo of the first Ford dealer in Idaho Falls. It has eluded most of us locals.

I wonder if they had oil in those cars? They don't have drip pans and the floor looks clean.

The second photo is in Inverness, Scotland.
47 Eastgate.
I do like the wooden ceiling in the later one with all the perfect noggins. Were the cross-beams single pieces of timber??

Thanks for another of your amazing stream of original photographs Tom. The first one has me baffled. With the only light sources they had back then, how did they get so much interior lighting for that picture???

Hey Ed!
That's actually an easy one - the photo was shot at night, with all the interior lights ablaze and a long exposure. It would look bright as day inside (even with the relatively poor incandescent lighting of the day as compared with "modern lighting") thereby making the agency "pop". With electricity being relatively cheap compared to today's prices, they could leave the showroom lit up like the 4th of July as its own billboard.
If you look closely at both the surrounding sky and especially the wondows to the back of the agency (where the shop and parts department would be), they're all dark... whcih leads me to guess it was a night shot while they were closed.
It's like the car lots that used to have lights blazing at all hours to grab people's attention. Even the (deleted "C" word) dealer my grandma worked at had their showroom a'blazing throughout the night to show off the latest of thaeir French-named (pardon my French!

) vehicles. Great (and at the time) cheap advertising, as it was one of the best lit places in town at night.
