Working on idea for different approch to magneto coils

Has anyone thought about or tried coating the strip with insulating varnish, then wind and wrap? Then after assembling, coating the whole thing with the varnish and baking?

I've thought about it enough to decide never to try it. I feel this would require perfect quality control meaning perfect coverage with a uniform coat of electrical varnish and a way to dry the copper strips before winding the coils. Not saying it cannot be done, but just one point of metal to metal contact could impair function of the individual coil or worse, compromise the mag ring circuit. Mag ring rebuilding isn't rocket science, but can become tedious because to have a good result the insulation needs to be perfect. (And as others here have mentioned, the tedium of mag ring rebuilding is much less than the tedium of removing and replacing a failed mag ring in the engine. YMMV, jb

Many years ago I rebuilt a mag coil using insulated copper coil wire and then gave it a good coating or two of Glyptal. It is still in service.

As a teenager I used to make power transformers for old battery radios so they could be plugged in! I’ve continued to play with stuff like that. So I have experience.

Les, your wire winding is what I thought would be a better /quicker way to achieve the same result, but I had no idea if enough wire could be wound in the same space to work in the same manner. I had visions of insulated spools being wound with wire, the spools being pressed onto the mag ring poles, and a heavy insulating dip used to bake it all together.

Glyptal is a special insulating varnish that has been used for years for this application. I see it is listed online today. I probably used 14 gauge wire and probably stacked it 2 or 3 windings wide and the same number of turns as original. The car starts easily on mag and hand crank!

Les,
Have you ever tried to rewind a generator armature, is so with success. Hyatt used to rewind their on motors. I should have paid attention. The retired worker died about a year ago, after I contacted him but before I met with him.

I have not needed to rewind a armature. I have resoldered the commutator.

I read somewhere that there is NEW insulated 3/16 strip for seal .
Do one of you know something about that ???

RV had the wire. He had a special run made many years ago.
I have rewound generator armatures, it is not hard work. Just very time consuming and tedious. After winding the armatures are dipped and baked. A Lejay manual will tell you more than you want to know about winding.

Dan,
Thanks for the info on rewinding armature. I have two generators. One good one and one that got fried when a diode failed. Just thinking of trying to rewinding one, as I am always trying to expand my experience and knowledge. $200. For a rewound armature. That sounds reasonable considering all.

Art, it’s a whole lot easier to come by and grab one off the shelf. I’ve got a growler here, too, to check the armatures.
