Anybody ever add a luggage rack?
I have a '17 touring and often on tour end up offering my back seat to other Model T'ers for one reason or another. Has anyone ever built a removable rear luggage platform or luggage box for a touring of '16-'23 vintage? If so, any info and photos would be appreciated. I'd like to be able to strap some lawn chairs, etc. to it but then take it off when not touring. I also don't want to move the existing "correct" tail light and license plate bracket. My left running board already has a spare and a tool box on it and I don't want to clutter the right one. It also would have to fit in the space available when the top was folded down.

There were several "era" manufacturers of accessory trunk carriers which provided the same mounting spaces for the light & license plate - few & far between though !

Tim, I have a nice folding one that straps on a rear spare tire. I’m using it on my merc spare tire. I can post pics as it would be pretty easy to make. Very light steel construction, and a nifty accessory you can put on and take off easily,

Re: Anybody ever add a luggage rack?
Tim,
My '17 didn't have a spare (original wheels non-demountable) so when I added one I mounted it by the driver's fake door. I'd be curious to see what your mount is like, I wouldn't have the spare but I might be able to adapt the mechanism.

I thought about adding a luggage rack but so far I haven't.
Here's a vintage picture of one.

I’ll take pics and glad to send dimensions or even send you the unit to copy. I’d say it could be easily made to hang over the rear seat. Pics later, just getting moving,

The past is a great place and I don't want to erase it or to regret it, but I don't want to be its prisoner either.

Re: Anybody ever add a luggage rack?
This one is very light, even being steel. Aluminum stock would be even better. I changed the hole to match the angle of my rear spare. Also has an oilcloth covered pasteboard trunk that’s held on with leather straps. Note the latch, the drop arms and also the slots for the leather straps. I’d say a junior high level metal shop project ( if they still had such a thing!) let me know if you want it Tim, and it’ll be on the way.

Dropacent - you don't still have this by chance do you? It's exactly what I'm looking for. I take my family around with our 1919 touring and we really need an external rack and spare mount.
Let me know!!

It wasn’t for sale, sorry. I offered to loan it to Tim. Here is another style, but this one will churn your milk into butter, I’m afraid.

Re: Anybody ever add a luggage rack?
In 1929 my mom, her sister, brother, and sister-in-law drove out to New Mexico and Arizona in this Chebby. In those days such a trip was a big adventure, and they talked about it the rest of their lives.
Often the trunk was an actual trunk, set on supports bolted to the frame.
