Brass Horn Tube thread size?

I have a repro Vintique brass horn conduit that does not thread onto an original horn. (Imagine that!! :o ) What is the correct thread size of the original brass twist horns? Maybe I can order a tap from McMaster to clean the threads enough where the replacement conduit will screw onto the original horn tube.

TIA

Brent,
Those Vintique pieces won’t fit original pieces. I have a Rubes double twist with a original reed holder and bulb bracket. Both would not take the Vintique pieces which is a 5/8x28 thread
The correct Ford thread, 41/64" x 27

I have one original pice that threads over the reed on the Horn end. I do need 1 extra help piece that goes into the bulb end and threads into the bulb bracket. RV Anderson was making one up for me since he had the correct tap but never got done since his passing. If you get a tap I’d be interested in purchasing a threaded piece from you for my bulb end.

Thanks Mike. A quick scan of McMaster does not list that size tap, so I guess I may need to thread a piece of tool steel in the lathe and make something that resembles a thread chaser. Vintique was SO proud to boast this was Made in USA however they apparently did not have the desire to make it accurately.

Brent,
During the 1915 model year Ford changed to what I presume was the industry standard at the time, 5/8 x 28. This is what Vintique uses for all their pieces. You can get a new horn reed adapter that will work with the pieces from Vintique the issue there is the piece has threads inside also to accept a threaded reed. The originals had a push in reed. I don’t know about you but I’ve found that original reeds sound better than the repos. Also the bracket that holds the bulb end is available that will accept the Vintique sleeve the issue again there is those brackets are notorious for breaking where they are soldered together. I have an original for my 12, I found out it was original because it would not accept the Vintique sleeve that has different threads.

This horn came from a late '15 Touring however the Vintique conduit does not fit this horn. I will see if I can put a thread gauge on both to see if there is a difference in pitches.

Brent, does the piece begin to thread then get hard to turn? If so it could be your horn pieces could be the earlier threads (left over piece's from earlier horns. Or perhaps the threads might be damaged? There’s quite a history with the Rubes and Nonpareil Horns. Here is an article from the Cycle and Automobile Trade Journal, April 1, 1910 edition. Check pages 88 and 94 (search for the word Rubes), you will see that Louis Rubes - Ernest Rubes held the patents - stepped down from his position at Nonpariel Horn Company.

I have all the taps and dies of very very fine threads to match those. Let me know.
